New Season Captivates Viewers by Showcasing Southern

Californias Vast Artistic Landscape

BURBANK, CALIF. - April 1, 2013 - KCET, the nations largest independent television station serving Southern and Central California, a service of KCETLink, is pleased to announce its award-winning, transmedia arts and culture journalism series, Artbound, will return for a second season on Thursday, April 4 at 9 p.m.

The series, which is composed of short documentaries voted upon by readers from popular articles on the website, features innovative artists and culture creators in diverse artistic practices throughout Southern California. With more than 40 contributors, across 11 counties in the region, Artbound contributors are invested in their communities, diving deeply into stories that are often underrepresented in other media outlets.

Were excited to provide a new season of Artbound, highlighting some of the most creative and imaginative voices in Southern California, said Juan Devis, Executive Producer of the series and Vice President of Arts and Culture Programming, KCETLink. This series is more than an exploration of art in our region; it is a powerful examination of innovation that impacts the world.

The hour-long, premiere episode follows a group of artists who venture inside a simulated Middle Eastern city at a 29 Palms Marine Base to create the Plein air drawings of military installations by Hillary Muskin. Viewers then travel north to Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa where music professor Craig Russell recreates the fandango and its role in mission music to understand the confluence of culture and conflict that collides in the early days of Californias statehood.

The program also uncovers the wearable art of Victor Wilde of the Bohemian Society, a downtown Los Angeles fashion designer whose pieces are one-of-a-kind, and modified by bullets, blowtorches and jagged knives. In South Los Angeles, viewers meet hip hop photographer Mike Miller, who chronicled the rise of West Coast hip hop, photographing iconic images of rappers Tupac, Eazy E and N.W.A. Also, featured is the new country, folk sound of Carly Ritter - daughter of the late actor John Ritter - whose music channels the spirit and the sound of Laurel Canyon.

Since its launch in May 2012, Artbound has seen significant growth in its online voting feature. Each week, articles with the most votes are produced into weekly videos that will air in the television series. Artbound marks the first time in KCET history that viewers are able to curate the content they watch. Episodes of Artbound Season 2 will air on KCET on May 2, May 30, June 27, July 25 and August 22.

Artbound returns to KCET after earning critical praise for its inaugural efforts in 2012, including two Golden Mike Awards for Best Entertainment Reporting and Best Internet News Reporting and First Place for Documentary or Special Program, Short from L.A. Press Clubs Fifth Annual National Entertainment Journalism Awards. L.A. Weekly also named Artbound the Best Art and Culture Website for 2012.
