Molly Sterling to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2015
27 February 2015: Molly Sterling, a 16-year-old schoolgirl from Nenagh in Co Tipperary, has won Eurosong on the Late Late Show and will represent Ireland at the 60th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna this May.
The song, Playing with Numbers , co-written by Greg French, was announced the winner when it topped the scoreboard, which comprises a combination of public and jury vote.
Molly is currently in 4th year in St Andrew's in Booterstown, Dublin 18. She and songwriter Greg co-wrote Playing with Numbers as part of her upcoming album. She says the song is about the risks people take every day in love and in life, and the experiences of taking the road less travelled. Molly said of her win: It's an unbelievably feeling! I can't believe that it happened, it's amazing. I just want to make everyone proud and Greg has worked so hard on this. I just love performing and I can now do it in an international scale it's mind-blowing. I don't think my school will mind that I haven't handed in my assignment. They're all so supportive and they know this is what I've wanted to do since I was in nappies!'
Greg French is a songwriter and producer, as well as composer and musical director for TV and film. His recording studio and digital label are focused on developing young talent and providing opportunities for up and coming artists. Greg said: Molly is just amazing. The song is about a gamble and taking risks in love and we were taking a risk as well! I'm just in shock. We came here to have fun and music is subjective so I did not except this at all. We were working on an album and we accelerated everything we were doing for Eurosong and it has all fallen into place. I will be very proud when she represents Ireland at Eurovision.'
The other acts who performed tonight on the Late Late Show were Kat Mahon; Alex Saint and the MJs; Kat Mahon; Erika Selin and Nikki Kavanagh.
The discussion panel comprised superstar Panti Bliss, Eurovision fan and TV presenter Mairead Farrell, the Godfather of Eurovision Phil Coulter and Eurovision winner Linda Martin.
Of the winning song Panti said: This is the song for me. Its lyrical maturity is astonishing. It's a beautiful song. Molly's got a great future.' Phil Coulter likened Molly to Kate Bush calling her a major talent'. Linda said I love the song and I love her she's got a fantastic quality in her voice.' While Mairead Farrell said she really liked the song and that Molly looks like a cool 16 year old.'
This year's Eurovision will be held in Vienna, Austria in May, with Ireland competing in the second semi-final. The Eurovision final takes place on Saturday 23 May.
