With the support of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), over 30 South African filmmakers will attend the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from 4 to 14 September.
For the second year the NFVF in partnership with Film Market Access (FMA) has selected three producers and four emerging filmmakers from South Africa to participate in the Toronto Program, taking place during the festival. The program is designed to widen and strengthen each participant s current professional network. It is also designed to help each participant gain valuable industry knowledge from TIFF industry programs. Participants will have an opportunity to attend panels, screenings and receptions and take full advantage of the ample business opportunities which the festival offers.
NFVF funded feature Impunity is the only South African feature film in the festival s official selection. The film tells the story of a murder investigation surrounding the death of a cabinet ministers daughter. While the special investigator and a local police detective run into political corruption and conspiracy, the involvement of two young lovers caught up in a killing spree tests the limits of justice. The film is a psycho-political thriller directed by Jyoti Mistry, and starring Desmond Dube, Alex McGregor, Vaneshran Arumugam and Bjorn Steinbach.
Some of the projects which will also feature at the festival include:
Beats of the Antonov
Beats of the Antonov tells the story of the people of the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains in Sudan, showing how they deal with civil war. Traditionally music has always been part of daily life in these areas, but now, it has a new role in a society challenged by war.
Stories of our Lives
Stories of our Lives documents hidden personal stories of lovers, fighters and rebels and the community histories that characterise the gay experience in Kenya.
Love the One you love

Jambula Tree
Anyango and Sanyu are two girls in love. One is a scholarship student from the townships; the other is the governor s daughter. The society, their families and the law are against same-sex relationships, but they decide to risk everything for love.
Inspector Lou
Inspector Lou travels to Kinshasa to arrest Huang, a gangster he has been after for the past 30 years. There, he joins forces with a Congolese police officer, Ange.
The New Missionaries
The New Missionaries follows the story of Rael, a Frenchman who became the leader of the biggest UFO religious cult in the world with over 90000 followers.
Rollaball
Rollaball is a feature-length documentary about Ghana s skate soccer team, the Rolling Rockets, who play a skateboard-inspired version of soccer adapted to suit their disability.

The Colonel s Stray Dogs
In 1981 seven Libyan exiles formed the major opposition to Colonel Muammar Gadaffi. Thirty years later, they have their country back only to inherit the mess he left.
