Vizrt revs up efficiency of player-tracking production for broadcast

Vizrt presents new player-tracking enhancements to Viz Libero and Viz Arena at IBC 2014.

Graphics guru Vizrt hit the IBC scene with a bevy of announcements, highlighted on the sports end by new player-tracking enhancements to the Viz Libero system and Viz Arena solution.

A new feature of the Viz Libero system makes it possible to track players and show their movement on the playing surface without any special cameras deployed at the stadium. The operator clicks on a player and Viz Libero can automatically track them and correct itself if the view of the player becomes obstructed at any point.

Viz Arena image-based analysisThe enhancements promise to increase the efficiency of live player-tracking and simplify the entire player-tracking workflow process. The new function removes the need for keyframing the player in post, meaning the graphic is ready to use quicker and for live playout during a broadcast.

The company emphasized that this is not a push in the rapidly growing data and player-tracking market. This is purely a play to improve the quality of player-tracking presented to the viewer at home.

Vizrt is a graphics and media company, so we really don't want to enter the player-tracking market, says Dr. Stephan Wurmlin Stadler, Executive VP, Sports, at Vizrt. For us, this is for the sole purpose of super-rapidly adding graphics to a player, whether it's a label, a marking, or a trail.

In Viz Libero, operators can still manually override the automatic tracking if needed. It can also be carried out from a broadcaster's own studio, using Viz Libero and a direct satellite feed from the venue.

Vizrt, which has provided the graphics, video, and analysis for every major sports event this year, including the Super Bowl, Sochi Winter Games, and World Cup in Brazil, also added some capabilities to Viz Arena. The system can now be used downstream in the studio, using the clean feed of the game. The product has also grown its sports catalog, adding soccer, American football, tennis, and rugby. The system also features the capability to plug into existing live player and data tracking systems, allowing for the insertion of that data that's already being collected by the leagues in many cases.
