SVG's annual TranSPORT conference returned to New York City on Tuesday, drawing a packed house of more than 300 sports-broadcast engineers, operations leaders, and technology partners for a full day of sessions focused on the rapidly evolving world of live-sports transmission.
SVG's annual TranSPORT conference was hosted on Tuesday in New York City.
The event explored the latest innovations in IP and cloud-based transport, 5G and bonded-cellular connectivity, compression standards and protocols, REMI workflows, and more, offering a comprehensive look at how sports networks are rethinking contribution and distribution in 2025 and beyond.
After opening remarks, the day kicked off with a lively discussion titled The Current - and Future - State of Live Transmission: IP, Satellite, and Hybrid Workflows. featuring FOX Sports' Brad Cheney, Paramount/CBS's Ken Fuller, Warner Bros. Discovery's Julie Morrison, Sinclair Broadcasting Group's Paul Spinelli , and ESPN's Adam Whitlock. The group explored how IP continues to reshape contribution infrastructure, the enduring value of satellite, and the rise of hybrid workflows that blend both technologies to achieve scale, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Following a networking break, ESPN's Adam Whitlock presented JPEG-XS Spotlight: How ESPN's Contribution Scheme Continues To Evolve, highlighting how the network has embraced the format across thousands of events to minimize latency and maximize efficiency. Cheney then returned for Navigating Today's Compression Formats, breaking down the strengths and trade-offs of codecs such as HEVC, JPEG-XS, J2K, and MPEG-4 - and how each fits into live workflows based on bandwidth, latency, and image quality considerations.
The morning concluded with SRT in Action: Redefining Secure, Low-Latency Delivery for Live Content. The panel featured Haivision's Ghislain Collette, Skyline Communications' Thomas Gunkel, Open Broadcast Systems' Kieran Kunhya, Game Creek Video's James Piccirillo, and Appear's Andy Rayner.
