Nedbank Cup champions mourn loss of rising star

Nedbank Cup champions TS Galaxy have confirmed the passing of one of their players Thembinkosi Mbamba, who lost his life in a car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 23-year-old started as the Rockets grabbed a shock win over Kaizer Chiefs in the final before being substituted later in the contest.

After the high of making history by becoming the first lower division outfit to win the Nedbank Cup just seven days go, the club is now in mourning, although the details surrounding the accident are still unclear.

A sad morning for the TS Galaxy family as we woke up to the sad news of Thembinkosi Mbamba's passing, TS Galaxy tweeted.

Last week we were celebrating with him, today we mourn him. Our sincere condolences to his family during this difficult period. Sleep well young Rocket.

TS GalaxyClub chairman Tim Sukazi extended his condolences to the Mbamba family.

We at TS Galaxy Football Club are deeply saddened by the passing of this rising star. Thembinkosi had a bright future ahead of him, and the football fraternity at larger has lost one of the most promising stars.

I would like to convey our commiserations to the Mbamba family.

Thembinkosi Mbamba was discovered through the Nedbank Ke Yona team, before joining Galaxy.

He made 11 appearances for the team in the 2018/19 season, helping them to an eighth-place finish before being part of the triumphant Nedbank Cup squad.

Mbamba's passing comes a little over a month after that of Free State Stars star Sinethemba Jantjie, who lost his life in April.

Just like the Galaxy midfielder, Jantjie lost his life in a car accident, just months before he was due to join up with Bidvest Wits after signing a pre-contract with the club.
