Five questions with Greg Brown As were heading to GDC 2015 we thought it made sense to catch up with our Creative Specialist and resident games guru, Greg Brown.

Were super excited to be attending GDC (Games Developers Conference in San Francisco) this year where well be on the Epic, Unreal Engine, Wacom and Mixamo booths. One of the main people youll see jumping from booth to booth is Greg. Lets get to know a little bit more about him, including that game moment that made him cry.

What does it mean to be the Games Creative Specialist at The Foundry?

Well...I think it means that I have the coolest job in the world. I visit games customers throughout the world and show them why MODO and MARI are the future of game asset creation.

How have you seen the game character development evolve in recent years?

Its actually very multifaceted. The most recent movements is toward real time physically based shading, much higher levels of detail both in texture and geometry resolution, usage of 3D content creation tools in the concepting phase, greater usage of standardized formats like fbx as opposed to propietary formats, and workflows emphasizing rapid iteration.

We are seeing a rise in the number of games that utilize user generated content, what is this and what is the impact?

User generated content is a fairly recent development where developers leverage their communities to develop assets for a game. Often these assets are sold on a virtual store and the sale is shared with the content creators. Our entry level products MODO and MARI Indie are both used to create this kind of content as they are both make high end software available to students. Prominent games that have been doing this are Valves TF2 and DOTA 2. One of our more prominent game-artist users of full MODO, James OHare has many items in the DOTA marketplace.

Which game from your childhood inspired you to be in this industry?

Wow...almost too many to list...Doom and the modding community that spawned from it showed me that this was accessible technology. Rebel Assault absolutely blew my mind. I still remember my first experience seeing it running at a compusa, I was dizzy with glee.

Final Fantasy VII illustrated to me how this technology could be could be leveraged for story telling purposes. When a game brings tears to the eyes of a room full of teenagers, you know its special. Oh Aeris....*Sniffle*.
