Rest in Power, a True Legend of Our Screens
Johannesburg, South Africa 27 May 2025 The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) joins the nation and global film community in mourning the untimely passing of Presley Chweneyagae, a trailblazing actor whose talent, depth, and dedication elevated South African storytelling to global acclaim.
Born in Mafikeng on 19 October 1984, Presley's journey into the world of performance began at the tender age of ten through drama classes at the North West Arts Council (now Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation). From these humble beginnings, he went on to become one of South Africa's most celebrated screen and stage actors.
His breakout role in Tsotsi (2005), a project proudly funded by the NFVF, propelled him to international recognition. The film made history as South Africa's first Oscar-winning feature, receiving the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film - a moment of national pride that showcased the world-class talent within our borders. Presley's performance in Tsotsi remains one of the most iconic portrayals in African cinema.
Throughout his career, Presley exemplified artistic excellence across theatre, television, and film. His body of work includes powerful performances in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), the acclaimed series The River (2018), and stage roles such as Hamlet in Hamlet, Mark Antony in Julius Caesar, and Orestes in Dikeledi. He also co-wrote the critically acclaimed play Relativity, later published by STE Publishers, and directed the award-winning production CELL NO 4.
A multiple SAFTA Best Actor awardee (2006, 2019, 2023, 2024), Presley's accolades are a testament to his lasting impact on the South African entertainment industry. Presley's accolades are a testament to his lasting impact on the South African entertainment industry. Beyond the screen, he was a committed mentor and advocate for youth development in the arts - a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Presley was a national treasure that loved his craft. His passing at the age of 40 is an immense loss to the South African film and television industry. The NFVF extends heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, family, and all those who were touched by his spirit and brilliance says the NFVF CEO, Dr. Vince Blennies.
Thank you, Presley, for the powerful stories you brought to life, the countless lives you touched, and the legacy you leave behind. Your light will continue to shine.
ENDS.
