Technicolor Captures Classic 70's Cinema Look and Feel for CBC Series Caught

Technicolor Toronto's creative team built upon the 70's era look shot by the DP, Philip Lanyon.

The in-houseVFX team delivered more than 170 VFX shots in support of the story working with the show's producers.

Caught is a five-part original series from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) adapted from Lisa Moore's acclaimed best-selling novel. Set in 1978, Caught tells the story of criminal David Slaney's last chance at freedom after breaking out of New Brunswick prison. He soon learns that nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted.

As episodic television continues to change the content creation landscape as we know it, Technicolor has the infrastructure and experience with workflow innovation to manage the evolution and deal with the issue of scale - enabling storytellers to release productions both on schedule and to the high-quality, cinematic level audiences expect. For this first season of Caught, the Technicolor Toronto creative team that provided picture post worked on creating its 70's era look, often seen in classic films of that time. Additionally, the in-house VFX team in Toronto delivered more than 170 VFX shots for the new CBC mini-series. In collaboration with show producers John Vatcher and Allan Hawco (who also stars), the team delivered invisible visual effects meant to play a supporting role in telling the story of Caught.

We used super baltars for the early 70's footage and vintage Cooke Panchros for the later 70's, drawing colour inspiration from a photo series called documerica, said DP Philip Lanyon, who filmed the series on location in Newfoundland, Ontario, and the Dominican Republic using vintage lenses to achieve the desired 70's look. Subtractive colours of cyan, magenta, and yellow (in this case tobacco) were referenced to colours of old photos from that time period. Tobacco and cyan were used for [scenes set in] Mexico and Canada, magenta was used in the early 70's scenes.
