For Major League Soccer creative teams, 2027 is going to be unlike any year they've planned for before.
MLS's new Sprint Season will kick off in February with a 14-match regular season, followed by the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS Cup in May. Then, just weeks later, clubs will begin preparing for another opening day when the league's new summer-to-spring calendar officially begins in July.
For creative departments, that creates an unusual challenge. A three-month regular season still requires a season's worth of creative support. There are home matches to produce. In-venue content to build. Sponsors to service. Social channels to feed. Marketing campaigns to execute. And potentially a playoff run to support.
But investing the same time and resources into a traditional preseason media day - knowing another full season begins only months later - may not make sense for every club.
The understandable response will be to simplify. Lean heavily on existing assets. Produce more internally. Save the larger creative investment for the full 2027-28 season. That may be exactly the right approach. But doing less doesn't have to mean settling for less.
The opportunity for MLS creative teams isn't necessarily to recreate their traditional media day for a shortened season. It's to identify what they actually need for the Sprint Season, what they can repurpose from 2026, and where a smaller amount of strategic production can fill the gaps.
Start With the Gaps, Not the ShootTraditional media-day planning often begins with the production itself: What are we shooting? What's the set? How much player time do we have?
The Sprint Season may call for reversing that process. Start with what already exists.
What assets from 2026 can continue working? Which player elements remain relevant? What footage can be re-edited or recontextualized? Which graphics packages can be updated? Which existing creative concepts can be evolved rather than replaced?
Then identify the gaps.
New players will need assets. Sponsors may have new deliverables. Uniforms or brand elements may change. In-venue presentation still needs to feel current. A season-opening campaign still needs to tell fans that something new is beginning. Once those gaps are defined, the production requirement may become considerably smaller.
Instead of rebuilding the entire creative ecosystem for a 14-game regular season, teams can focus their resources specifically on the things that actually need to change.
That's a very different question from, How do we pull off another media day?
It's What's the minimum new capture we need to make everything else work?
Think in Systems, Not Individual AssetsThis is where modular creative becomes particularly valuable. Rather than producing individual assets for every possible need, teams can create a visual system that generates multiple executions from a relatively small amount of new material. Consider a Sprint Season player-intro package.
Instead of building an entirely new production environment, an existing visual concept might be re-skinned with a new graphic language, color treatment, edit structure, music or environmental elements. New player capture can then be designed specifically to plug into that system.
One controlled player performance could potentially support an in-venue introduction, social announcement, matchup graphic, promotional spot and sponsor execution.
A small amount of new environmental or player footage could provide the connective tissue that makes existing material feel current again. Even a season-opening video doesn't necessarily need to begin with an empty timeline.
Existing footage can be re-edited around a new narrative. New voiceover, graphics, sound design, music and selective player capture can transform familiar material into something that feels intentionally created for the Sprint Season rather than recycled from the previous year. The goal isn't simply to reuse assets. It's to design new creative around what you already own.
Make the Sprint Season Feel IntentionalThere is an important distinction between a lean creative approach and one that feels temporary. Fans don't experience a club's internal production budget.
Sponsors don't experience the creative team's staffing constraints. They experience what's on the videoboard, what's in their feeds and how the club presents itself.
And despite its shortened schedule, the Sprint Season isn't an exhibition. It will crown an MLS Cup champion and determine qualification for major international competitions.
That means clubs have an interesting creative challenge: acknowledge that this is a unique transitional season without treating it like something everyone simply needs to get through. The temporary nature of the Sprint Season can actually become part of the creative idea.
It's fast. It's unusual. Every match carries more weight. There are only seven regular-season home matches. Instead of hiding those constraints, creative teams can build around them.
A campaign doesn't necessarily need the scope of a traditional season launch if the creative idea itself communicates urgency, scarcity and momentum.
Fourteen matches. One sprint. Everything counts. That's not a limitation. That's a creative brief.
Protect the Team From the Second Starting LineThe biggest challenge may not actually be producing the Sprint Season. It may be what happens immediately afterward.
MLS's first full summer-to-spring season begins in July 2027, only a short time after the Sprint Season concludes. For creative teams, that means the finish line of one season essentially becomes the starting line of another.
While clubs are producing match-day content, servicing sponsors and potentially supporting a playoff run in April and May,
