I'm really passionate about WeVideo in Education, because it is the area where I see the potential of WeVideo as a collaborative storytelling platform is being unleashed right now.
Let me share some of my views on why WeVideo will have big impact on Teaching and Learning in Education.
No hardware. No installation. No Internet. No boundaries. WeVideo decouples video projects from localized technology resources like hardware and software. This makes video creation projects accessible, so its possible for educators to use it and knowing that their students' attention will be on the content. With WeVideo, students need no longer worry about having access to a single editing computer at school or the correct software installed at home. With our latest initiative, WeVideo Next, students can start editing videos with material on their local computer, without even being connected to the Internet.
Engaged Learning WeVideo encourages student creativity & storytelling, as well as increases student engagement. Media engages today's digital native. Using storytelling, visual communication and modern technologies makes students play on multiliteracies (technology literacy, visual literacy, media literacy, information literacy and creativity) that makes the learning experience more inclusive, playful and motivating.
Creating digital stories acts as a motivator for students and they remain engaged throughout the project. Digital stories provide an alternative way for students who struggle with writing traditional text.
Project-Based Learning (Multimedia Projects) Interdisciplinary teamwork is the nature of complex problem solving. Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a real-world lab where students become producers of knowledge by exploring topics in depth, rather than passive consumers.
WeVideo is all about PBL where students collaborate on creating video projects to build multimedia presentations and thereby addressing Common Core. Instead of reading history from a textbook, students can be historians as they make a documentary about an historical event. As they engage in building the documentary, they can construct deep knowledge about the topic.
21st Century Skills Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication and Collaboration are the 4 Cs of 21st century skills. With WeVideo educators can develop these core skills through collaborative video projects. WeVideo opens up a variety of collaborative models:
teacher initiation of video projects by starting the story
individual or teamwork
teacher or team member review during the creation process
screening of student movies with feedback and reflection from the whole class
Adaptive and inclusive learning environment WeVideo provide an adaptive video learning environment that is ideal for class projects where students may have a wide disparity of skills. WeVideo comes with three editing modes, from Novice to Advanced. The adaptive interface allows students to move seamlessly between each level, based on their experience and familiarity with video editing. Educators can enable each student to participate at their level, and advance at their own pace.
Private and secure Walled garden There is an increased awareness in education around students sharing of video content - concerns about safety, privacy, and appropriate content. WeVideo provides a private, secure walled garden where default behaviour is that students can only share videos in their private project with teachers and students. Admins can decide to enable public sharing for a smaller group; it can be done on a school, class or individual level.
Bring mobile into the learning process Smartphone cameras are getting better and their accessibility and usability makes it a powerful video recorder. WeVideo supports capturing and creation on-the-go by it's companion apps for Android and iOS. In this way students can use their favourite gadget to capture videos from a field trip or when portraying their grandparents, make a rough edit on their smartphone and finish the edit on the web when they are home.
Simplified management and deployment in a Google environment Deployment of WeVideo in Google environments is now dead simple. WeVideo supports Google+ Single Sign On and reads both the user role (e.g., student) and school membership from the organization unit. This allows IT admins to provision users from Google Admin, and keep the organization structure updated in one place. The WeVideo Chrome App can also be pinned to the Taskbar or the Chrome App Launcher for the domain, so it is easy for the students to access the program.
