RT lyric fms Bernard Clarke Wins URTI 26th Int Radio Grand Prix

24 September 2014:Bernard Clarke, presenter of Nova and Opera Night on RT lyric fm, has been awarded the Grand Prix at the 26th International URTI Radio Grand Prix for his programme, The Savage Bull.

Created in 1989, the International URTI Radio Grand Prix rewards radio programmes across the globe for their efforts of research and originality. Each year a different theme is proposed to the participants and this year the chosen theme was War'.

Bernard Clarke won out for Ireland over stiff competition from entries from 34 different countries worldwide, as the judges assessed the 92 programmes entered, of which The Savage Bull was awarded the ultimate prize.

The Savage Bull comprises two parts: Tracing A-7063 and Human Shields.

In the making of Tracing A- 7063, Bernard was intrigued and inspired by a new documentary film in progress (working title A-7063) by young Polish director Maciek Klich, telling the story of Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Tors, in documentary film and animation. Bernard set out to render such a dual style of narrating a story, in sound, and dipped into archive interview audio of other concentration camp survivors. Bernard did the same with the music: the opening of Mozart's Requiem (in a recording as approved by the Nazi regime made in 1941, with all references to Christianity's Jewish roots excised: Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion was replaced by Deus in coelis ; whilst in Jerusalem was replaced by hic in terra ) with its whish and crackles and pops he uses these very surface noises to generate (through additive and granular synthesis) a lot of the sounds that follow.

Bernard says: What was uppermost in my mind was respecting the voices, keeping them as the primary sonic material and letting them tell their tales.

Human Shields is another radiophonic piece. After Sami Moukkadems opening narration we listen to Palestinian Doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish on the phone to Israeli broadcaster Shlomi Eldar, Channel 10, Israel. The conversation is in Hebrew and within the terrible distress is? My God, my God. What have we done? What have we done? He had just lost his three daughters and that sets the tone for all that follows.

Of this piece Bernard says: I drew on many sources between 2012-2014 (some 98 programmes), mainly current affairs and news. I borrowed the title from playwright Neville Carlyle-Style.
