Software 15A release brings new functionality to boost user experience and increase RAN energy efficiency as well as openness, resiliency and O&M efficiency to the cloud
With Software 15A Ericsson introduces a new software model for networks, similar to the software model in the IT industry
Ericsson Software model includes predefined software value packages ensuring better performance and a software subscription component reducing time to market for new functionality
Pace of change in networks is accelerating and puts great demand on prompt upgrades. With application virtualization, network evolution is increasingly driven through new software functionality. Our studies show that networks with the latest software release perform better and offer a superior user experience. With the increasing importance of regular software upgrades there is a need to adapt the telecom software models so that they become similar to the IT industry - with clear software packages and transparent pricing models. To achieve this, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) introduces a new software model, the Ericsson Software model, with the release of Software 15A.
St phane T ral, Principal Analyst Mobile Infrastructure and Carrier Economics, Infonetics Research, says: The telco model as we know it is obsolete. The old hardware-based telecom model isnt in synch with todays software-driven network reality. As virtualization increasingly decouples hardware from software, mobile operators need to embrace the ICT software model to become more agile and remain relevant.
Ericsson Software model introduces software value packages such as HD Voice, multi-carrier mobility and load management, enabling operators to simplify the implementation of innovative functionality. The software packages address customer needs in four areas; secure smart device business, increase coverage and capacity, drive efficiency and capture new revenues.
Together with a software subscription component, the Ericsson Software model reduces time to market for new functionality. With these software value packages delivered on a predictable basis, operators can more efficiently integrate upgrades into their network and simplify the network planning process. Regular upgrades mean that users always enjoy the best experience from the networks.

Networks can do much more today and their speed of evolution will only increase.
Software 15A contains hundreds of new and updated enhancements spanning Ericssons Radio, Cloud and IP portfolio; a few highlights of 15A include:
Ericsson Radio Dot system support for both LTE and WCDMA
Small cell coordination features including Combined Cell which improves throughput by 100 percent for a single user at the cell edge, and Coverage-Adapted Load Management to optimize network resources
Energy-saving LTE features, including Micro Sleep Transmission (TX) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Sleep Mode, which reduce power consumption during low-traffic periods
Three Carrier Multi-carrier for HSDPA, which provides download peak rates to 63Mbps, increases 3G network capacity by 40 percent and improves user experience for all load situation and entire cell
Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment 15A is based on OpenStack providing openness for third party applications and hardware. It focuses on a high level of resiliency through a triplicated cloud infrastructure controller and efficient infrastructure O&M.
Modem Assisted Service Classification which enables the monetization of single or multiple app bundles by dynamic, real-time service classification and policy enforcement.
