September Executive Strategy Webcast

To most technical types inside the television community, the term digital refers to serial digital video in facilities, digital compression on contribution and distribution links, or ATSC digital terrestrial transmission to the home. However, to most people outside the industry, and to a growing number of people inside the industry, digital television now means professional video content delivered over a network that features a one-to-one connection between the content and the consumer. Today digital television means video over the Internet, otherwise known by the popular colloquialism over-the-top (OTT). Soon, as major cable operators execute strategies to convert their cable systems to all IP and all unicast, this definition of digital will eventually apply to multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) as well. As it has in other industries such as music and print, digital has come to mean a radical new way of distribution, with new capabilities and challenges.

This webcast will explore how digital distribution is impacting the television ecosystem from both business and technology points of view. Michel Proulx, our presenter, will conduct a survey of the capabilities of digital distribution providing a contrast to equivalent capabilities in conventional distribution. We will also look at the challenges facing digital distribution today. Knowing that advertising represents a very important source of revenue for most broadcasters, Proulx will focus specifically on how digital distribution could dramatically change the advertising model. This presentation concludes with a call to action for each of the members of the television ecosystem to better understand digital distribution and to plan their next digital transition.
