September 10, 2014 This year was a record-breaking year for online video streaming, demonstrating the convergence of two trends: the pervasiveness of mobile devices and consumers' evolving expectations to view live, linear and on-demand video across devices. Likewise in the U.S., 5.3 million viewers tuned in for the Belgium and U.S. match on ESPN and Univision platforms, representing record-breaking traffic for both broadcasters.
The spike in online viewership for events such as the World Cup is a telltale sign of two growing trends affecting organizations battling for broader engagement. A recent survey conducted by research firm Millward Brown found that the average person spends 297 minutes a day on their smart phone, laptop or tablet, compared to just 147 minutes watching television. Not only are users increasingly using mobile deices, but they also expect live video streaming on every single device. In fact, Wowza Media Systems conducted a survey at the 2014 NAB Show that revealed that 68 percent of respondents use four or more devices on a regular basis and expect access to high-quality video streaming experiences on every one.
