Coventrys Weekend of reflection: Two days of events are taking place in Coventry next month to commemorate the 100 years since the start of the First World War.
Coventry Commemorates' runs from Sunday 3 to Monday 4 August over two venues and features specially-created artistic pieces, history talks and commemoration services.
On Sunday 3 August in Coventry Cathedral ruins, a commemorative event introduced by the Bishop of Coventry will take place and will be repeated three times at 1:30pm, 3:00pm and 9:30pm. Faith leaders from across the city will be participating in the 9:30pm event which will include a Universal Prayer for Peace'.
As part of the proceedings in the ruins on the day will be a free performance of 1000 Wishes' by Imagineer Productions. It is a moving 40-minute performance with live spoken text, strong visual imagery and an emotive musical underscore. Godiva will awaken to witness War Bride' which is the story of the women who were left at home while their loved ones went to fight.
It is a story of love, loss, comradeship and ultimately hope and the performance will culminate in the powerful image of 1000 origami cranes created by the many communities in Coventry that carry messages of peace. This will be performed at 1.30pm and 3pm.
The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth, Bishop of Coventry, said:
The First World War engulfed the world and led to atrocious levels of suffering and loss. The death tolls among European countries in the millions defy belief but the carnage extended to people of every continent. People of many nations and many faiths died and they all deserve to be remembered as we recommit to the cause of peace for which they died.

Coventry is known throughout the world as a city of peace and reconciliation and the commemorative events over this weekend in August will give all faiths time to reflect on what happened in the past and to look to the future as we all come together to work towards world peace.
