Acknowledges ViaSat for creation of transformational high-capacity satellite system
Carlsbad, Calif. - The World Technology Network (WTN) has named ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) as the 2013 World Technology Award winner in the Communications Technology category for its innovation in creating the high-capacity satellite system. Nominees were selected by the WTN membership (spread over 60 countries) through an intensive, global process lasting many months. ViaSat was selected for the honor from a group of 33 nominated companies.
The WTN named winners in 10 corporate and 20 individual categories for the World Technology Awards. Presented by the WTN in association with TIME, Fortune, CNN, and others, the World Technology Awards have been called the Oscars of the technology world in part because of their peer-review selection process.
Being selected out of such an impressive list of companies makes this award especially gratifying to us, said Mark Dankberg, ViaSat chairman and CEO. We want to thank the WTN for honoring us and for creating this forum for sharing and fostering technology innovation.
The ViaSat high-capacity satellite system, featuring ViaSat-1, the world's highest capacity satellite, is transforming the economics, speed, and service performance of satellite communications. The major objective of the new system design is to constantly improve bandwidth economics. By driving down the cost of bandwidth and enabling ever higher satellite capacity, the new system enables ViaSat and its customers to offer much faster and better performing services than satellite ever could before. The long-term implication of the innovation is to lift satellite communications from niche markets to a far more competitive position in several telecommunication markets. Once the last resort, satellite is now competing with wireless and terrestrial service alternatives for consumers and enterprises.
The November 15 awards gala occurred at the close of the World Technology Summit, a two-day thought leadership conference in the TIME & LIFE Building in association with WTN partner organizations. Most of the delegates to the Summit were 2013 award nominees, current WTN members (winners and finalist from previous awards cycles), as well as other leaders from business, technology, and industry.
