Show Me The Money: Westdoc Online to Cover Grants and Funding in Next Episode

Westdoc Online, an internet broadcast series dedicated to documentary and nonfiction filmmaking, announced today it will cover valuable information on securing grants and other forms of funding for documentary and nonfiction projects in its next episode livestreaming Wednesday, March 21 at 9:30am Pacific time on www.westdoconline.com.

Regardless of how long a filmmaker has been working in the industry, funding often seems like an overwhelming task that can make or break even the most promising projects. Our next episode will cover the different types of grants and funding sources available to filmmakers.

Some of the guests we'll be joined by have special insight into the funding process: Toni Bell, of the International Documentary Association (IDA); Jonathan Skurnik, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, educator and activist; Monika Navarro, a documentary filmmaker and the Senior Manager of Content & Initiatives for the Independent Television Service (ITVS); and consultant, facilitator and writer Morrie Warshawski.

Toni Bell is an independent filmmaker, a featured speaker at conferences and universities, and mentor and jury member for documentary festival labs for the IDA and its financial assistance programs. Her foray into documentary film began when she started writing and editing the newsletter for the Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers - West. This led to her first gig as production assistant then an archival researcher for the film, Bridging the Divide: Tom Bradley and the Politics of Race, which aired nationally on PBS. Since then she has done archival research for several movies and television shows including Centric's Being.

Jonathan Skurnik is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, educator and activist. Five of his films have broadcast on PBS and European Television and have been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, in art galleries and at over one hundred film festivals throughout the world. Jonathan also founded three ground-breaking, grassroots outreach and audience engagement projects that provide transformational educational experiences through facilitated screenings and immersive digital resources.

Monika Navarro recently joined ITVS as Senior Manager of Content & Initiatives. Her ITVS funded directorial debut Lost Souls (Animas Perdidas) aired on Independent Lens and Monika has worked in public media ever since - from producing at WGBH-Bostons World Channel to the Peabody award-winning series The Latino Americans.

Morrie Warshawski is a consultant, facilitator and writer who has assisted nonprofit organizations and individual artists for thirty years on issues of long range strategic planning, staff and board development, marketing and fundraising. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including: Shaking the Money Tree 2nd Edition (Wiese Books/LA), and A State Arts Agency Strategic Planning Toolkit (NASAA/DC). Recent clients have included: President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Habitat for Humanity San Francisco, Western States Arts Federation, Grantmakers in the Arts, and The National Endowment for the Arts.

The discussion will be moderated by Oscar-nominated documentary director Chuck Braverman, and will live-stream Wednesday, March 21 at 9:30 am Pacific time.
