Slithering Screens is a special selection of original cinematic works that premiered in the Sundance Film Festival's New Frontier program over the past decade, presented in five distinct programs over five consecutive nights at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
In addition to live experiences at MoMA, a selection of virtual reality works will be made available on the Sundance VR app for Google Cardboard from April 25 to May 5. Limited artist-edition Cardboard VR goggles designed by Yung Jake will be given away to Slithering Screens attendees each night.
The April 29 performance by Yung Jake will be live-streamed on MoMAs YouTube channel.
Tickets are available at moma.org/film or at MoMAs film desk. A limited number of special five-night Slithering Screens ticket packages may be purchased for $30 per person; free for members. (Please note that the ticket package does not include admission to the April 29 PopRally event.)
FULL LINE-UP DETAILS BELOW AND ONLINE
Presented at MoMA on the occasion of the Sundance Institute New Frontier program's 10th year, these works hack the cinema space by presenting stories that move from the silver screen onto the stage and into the hands, pockets, and homes of the audience. Live experiences include works by Lynette Wallworth, Yung Jake, Nao Bustamante, Miwa Matreyek, and the filmmaker/creative technologist duo James George and Jonathan Minard. Mobile virtual reality experiences include work by Nonny de la Pena, Chris Milk, Lucy Walker, Bjork Guomundsdotti, Danfung Dennis, Sandy Smolan and James Nestor, Randal Kleiser, the Royal National Theater, and more.
Slithering Screens is an energetic mix of cinema-inspired performances, interactive documentary, and immersive media storytelling.

A laboratory for independent filmmakers, a cauldron of creative expression, a celebration of artists voices; all of these describe the Sundance experience as it has evolved and thrived over the past 35 years. New Frontier at the Sundance Film Festival has become, in the past 10 years, a white-hot center of innovation for global image-makers. Were thrilled to take on the challenge of bringing these mind- and form-bending experiences to MoMA.
- Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film, MoMA
New Frontier started as a way for Sundance Institute to celebrate independent artists telling stories in a media landscape rapidly converging film, art, and emerging technologies. That in 10 years the program has grown to be a place where powerful innovations, such as virtual reality, continue to emerge is a testament to the important role storytellers play in developing our communications architecture. We are honored to collaborate with MoMA to present these exciting artists who hack the cinema space in telling beautiful, meaningful stories that expand our humanity.
- Shari Frilot, Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival, and Chief Curator, New Frontier
Organized by Shari Frilot, Chief Curator, New Frontier, Sundance Film Festival, and Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film, with Sophie Cavoulacos, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Film, MoMA.
