Screen Australia and With Her in Mind Network (whimn.com.au) have announced today that short-form documentary initiative Doco180 will return in 2018.
Doco180 provides funding for emerging, female documentary makers to create 180-second documentaries that aim to have the viewer do a 180' on a topic relevant to Australian women. Season one premiered in November and December 2017 and featured five documentaries that were available to view for free on whimn.com.au and their social channels. The works covered topics of race, health, motherhood, work/life balance and body image. Season two will again fund five projects, to premiere in October 2018.
Doco180 proved to be a powerful storytelling device, because not only were the documentaries easy to access, but viewers could instantly discuss the topics online, said Liz Stevens, Senior Manager of Documentary at Screen Australia. For season two we're looking for directors to pitch stories that ideally have not been explored before, or are examined in a unique way. We encourage applicants to play to the fact that Doco180 projects are likely being consumed on a mobile device, so they need to have a simple, attention-grabbing story that will prompt conversation.
With Her in Mind Network General Manager Georgi Pell said; Doco180 was incredibly successful for whimn.com.au in 2017 achieving over 1.8 million views across the series. We are delighted to partner with Screen Australian again in 2018 for this second exclusive digital video series to uncover more female-centric stories and to give women s voices a platform. Whimn.com.au will also support our Doco180 creators across our editorial and social channels to help amplify not only their film but their story too. There are so many topics and issues that are important to women today and no topic is off limits. The pitches we received last year were so insightful and compelling and we can't wait to see what the second series uncovers.
DOCO180 SEASON TWO
Up to five documentaries will form Doco180 season two.
Funding consists of a lump sum of $6,000 per 3 minute (180 second) documentary.
Applicants must be an Australian, female director aged 18 or over, with at least one credit (can be an online documentary). Applicants cannot be students.
Pitches can be about any topic relevant to Australian women, but must be told as a documentary as defined by the ACMA guidelines.
Content should ideally be G or PG rated. M-rated pitches may still be accepted if the subject matter warrants it.
Doco180 projects are subject to a one-year Whimn.com.au exclusivity period followed by an additional three-year non-exclusive period.
Multiple applications from the same director are acceptable.
The Doco180 application process is administered by Screen Australia. The program is joint (50/50) funded by Screen Australia and News Digital Networks Australia's Whimn.com.au.
