Sony, BCE and Level Communications to demonstrate 4K live over IP broadcast

Sony, BCE (Broadcasting Centre Europe) and Level 3 Communications will today demonstrate a full 4K production, with a frame rate of 50p, delivered live over IP. The broadcast will be captured in Ultra High Definition using Sonys PMW-F55 camera at BCEs live production studio in Luxembourg and screened as part of Sonys keynote speech at IBC 2014, taking place almost 250km away at the RAI Exhibition and Conference Centre in Amsterdam.

The live production will demonstrate the bi-directional transmission of 4K signals including audio and remote control (pan, tilt and zoom). Sony will continue to showcase this real time remote production in 4K/50p with routing of live audio/video over IP on its stand in the Elycium Hall at IBC, which runs until 16th September; delegates will also be able to see a live broadcast of this 4K feed from Luxembourg at BCEs booth in Hall 7.D12 of the exhibition.

Sony has teamed up with BCE and Level 3 Communications, operator of the global Vyvx broadcast fibre service, to facilitate the live video broadcasts over IP. The PMW-F55 will be operated on Remote PTZ Head over IP using Vintens camera control units, while the cameras colour matrix will be managed remotely with Sonys RCP-1500 control panel.

Live over IP to become the cornerstone of BCEs new production facility

BCE is currently building a new, state-of-the-art production facility in Luxembourg and is planning to configure all AV infrastructures within the building by IP. The company sees IP as offering vast flexibility around recording format and configuration, allowing it to pass on greater choice to its customers while reducing the on-going IT maintenance requirements placed upon its infrastructure. Broadcasters are also set to benefit from reductions in operational expenditure linked to live production, since live over IP minimises the staffing level, Outside Broadcast vans and cabling required for each project.

We see live over IP as a real game-changer, since it provides broadcasters with a potent combination of format flexibility, creative control and access-from-anywhere mobility, explained Gusty Feinen, Manager of New Technologies at BCE. We think this technology will play a significant role over the coming months and years as live broadcasters increasingly look to 4K picture quality as a differentiator, while still aiming to keep their costs and logistical operations to a manageable level.

Todays demonstration follows the announcement earlier this year of a licensing program for Sonys new Networked Media Interface for manufacturers, promoting the adoption of this technology across the industry.
