New mixing console delivers fast and agile workflow for the charity special of the nation's favourite dancing show
BBC Studios and Post Production has provided full studio facilities and technical support at Elstree for The People's Strictly for Comic Relief. The final episode of the pre-recorded series, which airs this week, sees contestants compete in front of judges Len, Bruno, Darcey and guest judge Anton du Beke on the famous Strictly Come Dancing ballroom floor.
To meet the complex audio requirements of supporting a full live orchestra and multiple mics, BBC Studios and Post Production upgraded its dedicated audio production gallery at the George Lucas Stage to a Studer Vista X large-scale mixing console technology for broadcast. The company's clients, particularly large entertainment shows of this scale, can now benefit from the increased processing power of the Studer Infinity Core.
Andy Tapley, Sound Supervisor at BBC Studios and Post Production, said: This investment in the Studer Vista X desk has further strengthened our gallery offering within the George Lucas stages at Elstree and enables us to streamline the delivery of studio audio, ensuring the requirements of a complex audio set-up like The People's Strictly for Comic Relief are met without compromise. We're delivering a high track count within a short space of time for each dance, and we have the flexibility to rearrange a mix to meet any last minute changes.
The ballroom episode was filmed in the 15,770 sq ft George Lucas Stage 1 in front of an audience of 750 people. The camera set-up followed the much loved format of the Saturday night show and comprised 10 cameras, including one 30' MovieBird Technocrane, five pedestal cameras, a radio Steadicam and three other handheld/lightweight tripod cameras. An extra Hot Head camera was used to capture the giant overhead shots of the dance floor action.
The four-part series sees Strictly Come Dancing throw open the sparkly doors of its ballroom for the very first time to the Great British public. It follows six lucky fans, chosen for the tireless and selfless part they've played in helping change others lives for the better, as they take to the ballroom floor. In front of the electric atmosphere and buzz created by the studio audience, each contestant gets their own once in a lifetime Strictly experience. Voted for by the public, The People's Strictly for Comic Relief champion will be crowned as part of the live Red Nose Day fundraising night on BBC One on Friday 13 March.

Its Digital Media Services team operates from a permanent, purpose-built facility at Odyssey Business Park, South Ruislip.
