AP to name 90th All-America team, resume teams for all 5 major conferences
The Associated Press All-America team, the longest-running annual roster of the nation's top college football players, will be announced Dec. 13. The AP also will name all-conference teams for all five major football conferences for the first time since 1977, starting Dec. 14.
The first AP All-America team was selected in 1925, a decade before the first Heisman Trophy. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo and a panel of 16 college football reporters who are among the voters in the weekly AP Top 25 poll will select players for each position to first, second and third teams.
The AP All-America team is one of the oldest traditions in college football, and AP is proud to ensure it continues with the help of those journalists who cover the sport every day, said Barry Bedlan, AP's sports products manager.
The all-conference teams for all five major conferences - the SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC - will be announced for the first time in a single season in 38 years. AP has named all-conference teams for the SEC and Big 12 (formerly Big 8) for decades, but had discontinued the practice for the Pac-12 (formerly Pac-10) in 1977, the Big Ten in 1993 and the ACC in 2006.
The all-conference teams will be decided by regional panels of journalists who cover the respective conference and teams. The teams will be announced as follows:
Dec. 14: Southeastern Conference
Dec. 15: Big Ten
Dec. 16: Big 12
Dec. 17: Atlantic Coast Conference
Dec. 18: Pacific-12
Along with the honorary teams, AP will name its college football Coach of the Year on Dec. 21 and Player of the Year on Dec. 22.
All will be released at 2 p.m. ET on AP lines to customers, as well as posted on AP's college football site, collegefootball.ap.org, and the AP Mobile app. AP will provide analysis and details across those platforms.
AP customers can leverage the release of its college football honors to grow digital traffic and new revenue through AP's locally branded College Football Digital News Experience.
The final regular-season AP Top 25 poll will be released this Sunday, Dec. 6. A national panel of 61 sports writers and broadcasters of AP-affiliated media who cover college football decide the 79-year-old poll. The final AP Top 25 will be released as soon as all their ballots are submitted after the end of the College Football Playoff championship game on Jan. 11.
