GForce launch Oberheim Matrix-12

Latest official Oberheim collaboration arrives

Following on from the launch of their new and improved website, GForce Software have released their latest officially licensed synth recreation, Oberheim Matrix-12. Designed in collaboration with Oberheim and Marcus Ryle - one of the Matrix-12's original designers - the new arrival is the only official software version of the Matrix-12 and Xpander, and pairs the iconic instrument's modulation system with a modern, visual interface.

Each of the instrument's 12 voices features a pair of modelled VCOs with triangle, saw and pulse waves (the second voice includes noise and hard sync); a filter that boasts 15 modes; and two VCAs in series, along with five envelopes, five LFOs, four ramps, three trackers and a lag processor. All of the features that were accessed via a small screen and menu system on the original instrument are now readily available, and GForce have equipped the remake with a powerful drag-and-drop modulation matrix that makes it far more accessible and easy to use than the hardware.

Other new additions include six micro arpeggiators, one for each keyboard zone; tempo-sync'ed ramps with linear-to-exponential curves; smoothing on every LFO shape; and a stepped tracker mode that turns any LFO into a four-step sequence. The instrument offers full support for MPE, and includes four global macro controls. It comes equipped with over 570 patches - more than 190 original Matrix-12 and Xpander patches and over 380 newly created sounds.

The Matrix-12 is the deepest instrument Oberheim ever built, but on the hardware, most of that depth was hidden behind a small display. Working with Oberheim and Marcus Ryle, one of the original designers, we set out to keep every detail of that sound and finally put the whole matrix in front of the player, where you can see it, touch it and play it. - Dave Spiers and Chris Macleod, Co-Founders, GForce Software
