Production on Amandla began on 30 March featuring an award-winning production team and ensemble cast. The film is a co-production between Firegrass Films (Canada) and M4gic-J Entertainment (South Africa).

Filmmaker Nerina De Jager from Los Angeles (a former South African), helms the film from a screenplay she penned herself. Composer Mauritz Lotz will provide the original music for the film.

Amandla is produced by Jarrod de Jong (The Blanket, Last Hours, Eintlik Nogal Baie) and executive produced by Riaan van der Wart (Firegrass Films). Shooting on location throughout Gauteng the film is slated for a September 2017 release worldwide via the US Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation.

Amandla portrays the tragedy of two inseparable brothers who are violently orphaned at a tender age, their lives assume entirely different directions. The oldest falls into a life of crime to ensure their livelihood while the youngest pursues justice as a policeman. When a savage crime drives the final wedge between them, brotherly love is put to a heart-wrenching test and the lies of their childhood are finally exposed. But through self-sacrifice their inviolable bond triumphs over their inner demons and malevolent external forces alike.

The South African ensemble cast includes: Thabo Rametsi (Kalushi), Lemogang Tsipa (Beyond the River), Israel Makoe (Doras Peace), Khulu Skhenjana (Invictus), Zondwa Njokeni (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Carlo Radebe (iNumber Number), Ncibijana Madlala, Nqobile Sipamla, Thabiso Masote, Bahle Mashinini and introducing Jeanique Fourie.

Celebrated actors from the stage and screen fill the supporting roles, including Andre Odendaal (Gat In Die Muur), Charlie Bouguenon (Alexia), Lucky Koza (Angus Buchans Ordinary People), Jaco Smit (Modder en Bloed), Natania Van Heerden (Nothing For Mahala), Abigail Kubeka (The Jakes Are Missing), Dirk Stoltz (Safe House), Elizabeth Serunye and Linda Sebezo.

The production team includes Justus de Jager (Eintlik Nogal Baie, Hell Trip, Hear Me Move) as director of photography. Vicky Sawkins (The Brothers Grimsby, Safe House, Queen of Katwe) serves as production designer. Anel Kleynhans (Eintlik Nogal Baie, Spook Van Uniondale) is the wardrobe mistress and Stella Johnson (Blended, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Black Sails) serves as the key make-up artist. Casting was done by Susan Rossouw (Mandelas Gun, Kite, Konfetti) and the film will be edited by the award winning Golden Bear winner Ronelle Loots (Four Corner, Heatstroke, Faith Like Potatoes).
