Hortensia Roig Is the First Spanish Woman to Join Berklee s Presidential Advisory Council

Hortensia Roig, general secretary of the Escuela de Empresarios (EDEM) in Valencia, Spain, has joined Berklee College of Music's Presidential Advisory Council. With this appointment, Roig becomes the first Spanish woman to serve on the council, joining 30 other highly regarded leaders in the business world committed to the promotion of music education.

With the combination of Hortensia's experience in higher education and entrepreneurship, she will bring an invaluable contribution to this strategic advisory body of the college, said Berklee president Roger H. Brown.

Being part of the president's council is a challenge that I face with great enthusiasm, since it involves joining the most recognized private college in the world of music, and gives EDEM an international link, said Roig. I am participating in a project that shares many of the same values with EDEM; such as excellence, leadership, and commitment to entrepreneurship.

EDEM School of Business (Escuela de Empresarios) is located in Valencia and was incorporated as a nonprofit private foundation. Its missions are to train entrepreneurs, managers and enterprisers, and to develop leaderships, entrepreneurial spirit, and the culture of effort.

I want to thank president Roger Brown for the opportunity he has offered me to contribute to the promotion of new initiatives for the development of entrepreneurial talent through music, she added.

Roig holds a law degree from the University of Valencia with a specialization in business. Before becoming the general secretary of the Escuela de Empresarios EDEM, she was director of the Junior MBA program for five years. She also serves on the Board of Administration of Mercadona, a chain of supermarkets in Spain with 1,471 stores and more than 74,000 employees, and on the board of the Institute for Family Business.

She has taught several workshops on entrepreneurial culture at the University of Valencia and participates frequently in presentations at events to promote entrepreneurship and business ethics. Roig began her legal career at the firm Uria & Menedez.
