ITV commissions six part drama Monroe starring James Nesbitt

ITV announces the cast and start of principle photography on MONROE.

Principal photography begins this week for ITV's new six-part medical drama series, Monroe, starring award winning actor James Nesbitt.

International director, Paul McGuigan, will bring acclaimed writer Peter Bowker's scripts to life. Paul's feature films include Lucky Number Slevin starring Morgan Freeman, Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis (Best Film and Audience Award at the Milan International Film Festival) and Gangster No. 1 starring Paul Bettany and David Thewlis. He also launched the BBC's successful television drama Sherlock earlier this year.

James Nesbitt will play neurosurgeon Gabriel Monroe and is joined by a strong ensemble cast including Sarah Parish (Mistresses, Cutting It) as cardiac surgeon Jenny Bremner; Tom Riley (Bouquet of Barbed Wire, Lost in Austen) as anaesthetist Dr Laurence Shepherd; Manjinder Virk (Britz, Bradford Riots) as registrar Sally Fortune, and Susan Lynch (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Nora) as Anna, Monroe's wife. Sarah Smart (Wallander, Funland) and Shaun Evans (The Take, The Virgin Queen) will guest star in episode one.

The 6 x 60 minute series examines Monroe's world inside and outside the hospital, with medical emergencies cutting across the lives of everyone involved from staff to patients and relatives. Monroe also has to contend with his two new medical trainees, Daniel Springer (Luke Allen-Gale) and Kitty Wilson (Michelle Asante) who have joined St Matthew's Hospital under his watchful eye.

Monroe has been commissioned by Laura Mackie, Director of Drama Commissioning, and Sally Haynes, Controller of Drama Commissioning, and is executive produced for ITV by Michele Buck and Damien Timmer from Mammoth Screen (Lost in Austen, Bouquet of Barbed Wire) and writer Peter Bowker (Occupation, Desperate Romantics, Wuthering Heights). Jennie Scanlon (Marple) is the producer, Howard Ella (Joe Maddison's War, Five Days) is co-producer and David Moore (Merlin, Sweeney Todd, The Forsythe Saga) will direct episodes four, five and six.

The series is filmed on location in Leeds and will be co-produced by Ingenious Broadcasting and Capico Productions.
