ITN honoured with Broadcast Special Recognition Award

ITN has been awarded the Broadcast Special Recognition in honour of the unique role it plays in the UK's public service broadcasting system and journalism.

ITN produces ITV News, Channel 4 News and 5 News, Jeremy Vine for Channel 5 as well as numerous factual productions for a broad range of clients.

During 2020 ITN's programmes attracted record viewing figures, producing extra services across linear and digital platforms during the pandemic to meet viewer demand.

Already in 2021 ITN has celebrated exclusives such as ITV News having the only camera crew in the world to capture the storming of the Capitol, comprehensive coverage of the recent UK elections including C4 News' Scottish Leaders' Debate and in-depth and varied reporting on the Indian variant.

These achievements demonstrate the breadth of experience and capability ITN has gained during its 65 year history.

ITN CEO Deborah Turness said: We are hugely proud to receive this award at such a crucial time for broadcast journalism.

Delivering trustworthy, impartial journalism in a world where there are more unverified and unscrupulous sources of information than ever before is a responsibility that all of our divisions are dedicated to. Being trusted to do so in a global pandemic when the public turn to us as a matter of life or death is a huge privilege and one we never take for granted. My belief is that we must earn that trust, and that ITN's core values based on truth and its creative ability are solid foundations to continue delivering all that this award recognises.

On awarding ITN with the prestigious accolade Broadcast, the industry trade bible, noted the challenging circumstances it has operated in during 2020 saying:

ITN has held a special place at the heart of public service broadcasting for 65 years, and is unique around the world for providing distinct, high-quality news content for three rival networks: ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

While the country was locking down, and people were being urged to stay at home, ITN had to do precisely the opposite. It found ways to adapt and report safely while striving to stay across a story that has no parallels in recent memory.

It demonstrated that a commercial operator could both deliver crucial public-health information and hold the government to account for its handling of the pandemic at the same time.

Broadcast also noted ITN's longevity and the value it brings to audiences in offering a range of services, adding: For six-and-a-half decades, ITN has provided plurality and helped raise standards in British TV news, and has expanded its remit significantly, producing a wide range of news, daily topical current affairs, factual series and live debates. It is established as a journalistic powerhouse that is an outstanding counterbalance to the type of fake news and misinformation that swirls around online.
