International research from Big Blue Marble puts a consumer churn number against a technical failure, and sets out what streaming providers must fix before 2030

62% of live sports viewers have been left behind real-time action, rising to 77% of Gen Z. 35% say it spoiled the experience and 14% have considered switching provider because of it

47% have abandoned a streaming subscription because signing up or paying was too complicated, rising to 65% of Gen Z and costing providers revenue lost before a stream is ever delivered

64% expect subscribing and paying to become faster and more seamless by 2030, and 62% expect what they pay to vary according to the features, content and advertising experience they choose

Big Blue Marble today announces new international research showing that technical performance has become a direct driver of streaming revenue. In a survey of 5,027 consumers across seven bellwether markets, 14% of live sports viewers said they had considered switching providers because their coverage fell behind real-time action. Big Blue Marble will present findings at IBC2026 (RAI Amsterdam, Sept 11-14) as part of the DPP Espresso Summit.

The study examines how consumers choose, pay for and experience streaming services, and what they expect of them by 2030. It finds that platform performance shapes spending decisions, with latency, payment friction and inflexible commercial models costing providers new subscriptions, cancelled subscriptions and upsell opportunities.

Latency has become a churn number

Sports content reaches 83% of the consumers surveyed. Among those who watch live sport, 62% have experienced being behind real time, seeing a result or a social media reaction before the action reached their own screen. That rises to 77% of Gen Z and 74% of Millennials. More than a third (35%) said it spoiled the viewing experience, and 14% said it was enough to make them consider switching providers.

The commercial exposure runs in both directions. Among sports viewers, 54%would pay extra for at least one premium feature such as full replays, alternative camera angles or personalized highlights, rising to 80% of Gen Z and 71% of Millennials. Every one of those features depends on real-time delivery and none of them can be built on a feed that is already behind. The investment that protects against latency-driven churn is the same investment that unlocks the premium revenue above it.

Michael Wagenhofer, Group CEO at Big Blue Marble, said: The industry has spent a decade competing on content and treating delivery as an engineering concern. Consumers no longer separate the two. A stream that falls behind, a payment journey that breaks, or an advertising load that feels unfair can now cost providers subscriptions and upsell opportunities. The providers best placed for 2030 will be those that treat their platform as a commercial asset rather than an operational cost.

Revenue lost before a stream is delivered

Nearly half (47%) of consumers have decided not to subscribe to a service because signing up or paying felt too complicated, rising to 65% of Gen Z. The friction is not confined to younger audiences. Asked about being sent out of an app to complete a purchase on a separate website, 45% said they probably or definitely would not bother, rising to 66% of Baby Boomers, the most stable and loyal subscribers in the study.

The two subscription features consumers value most are not content features at all. Easy cancellation (51%) and transparent pricing (50%) rank above everything else, while 52% would pay more for the convenience of subscribing and managing an account inside an app. Almost half (49%) have cancelled, paused or downgraded a service in the past year, most often because of cost, usage levels or the end of a season rather than dissatisfaction with the service itself.

What 2030 demands of streaming platform

Almost two-thirds (64%) of consumers expect subscribing and paying to become faster, easier and more seamless by 2030, and 62% expect what they pay to vary according to the features, content and advertising experience they choose. 59% expect to move seamlessly between devices, 57% expect control over how many advertisements they see, and the price attached to that choice, and 56% expect clips and highlights to be available almost instantly after live moments.

Together, these findings show consumers expect streaming services to adapt access, features, advertising and payment without replacing the underlying program or making the experience harder to use. The study describes this requirement as invisible adaptability, giving providers more flexibility while keeping the viewer experience simple.

Krzysztof Bartkowski, CEO at Big Blue Marble Streaming and Cloud Media, said: Every expectation consumers have for 2030 is a configuration problem. Paying according to the experience you choose, controlling your own advertising load and receiving highlights seconds after the moment cannot be delivered by systems that have to be rebuilt each time the commercial model changes. The question for providers is not whether the platform works today. It is whether it can absorb five years of commercial change without the viewer ever noticing, and whether it can carry live sport in real time while it does so.

The study surveyed adults in the United Kingdom, United States, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden and Norway in July 2026, using nationally representative age, gender and regional quotas. Results were also analyzed across Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers and older consumers.
