Op-Ed: The Versioning Playbook - How Rights Holders are Getting More From Live Events

Traditional live sports production has focused on creating the best possible program feed and then getting it to the rights holders. Broadcasters might add their own commentary or graphics on top but the main production was largely fixed because there were fewer places to watch and fewer versions of an event to deliver.

Fast-forward to 2026, and a single game can appear on television, streaming services, FAST channels and social platforms at the same time. The presentation that works for one may feel out of place on another. Some sports fans may want commentary in their own language or coverage led by a familiar creator, while others value the additional detail offered by digital graphics.

Production teams are therefore being asked to manage a growing number of live outputs from the same event. Creating another version is only part of the job because every output must remain synchronized and correctly branded. Rights holders also need to support these experiences without allowing production costs to grow at the same rate, which makes operational control essential.

More live sports feeds, one operation

Dedicated satellite paths are known to be expensive and relatively inflexible. Most productions therefore served a known group of destinations, and distribution placed a natural limit on the number of feeds an event could support. The growth of IP technology has removed many of those physical limits, making it easier for broadcasters to reach new partners and scale distribution more efficiently. That shift is already underway, with broadcasters including MASN, MSG Networks, PBS, Scripps, TelevisaUnivision, and Tennis Channel adopting IP based workflows as the industry prepares for the next Upper C-Band spectrum auction following the FCC's recent approval of the auction rules.

Greater flexibility introduces a different kind of constraint. Every feed needs the correct commentary and commercial content, while timing needs to be aligned with the pictures throughout the event. Any problem affecting one version must also be isolated before it disrupts the primary program or any other output.

There is an important difference between making' and operating' feeds; a team may be technically capable of launching dozens of versions but that capability means little if operators cannot see what the audience is receiving. Sustainable scale depends on clear control and reliable monitoring, with a straightforward way to intervene when something changes.

Effective versioning workflows begin by separating the parts of a production that remain consistent from those that change. The main pictures and editorial direction will often be shared, while language, graphics, advertising and platform presentation will vary by destination. Designing around those differences avoids recreating the complete signal path whenever a partner requests something different.

Templates can then describe how each output should behave. A configuration might assign an audio source, select the appropriate graphics package, apply the correct commercial rules and set the required platform format. Once approved, the same configuration can be reused throughout the season, rather than rebuilt for each event.

Automation can reduce repetitive work, but it does not remove the need for experienced operators. Live events change quickly, so production teams must retain editorial judgement and manual control. The most useful automation handles predictable tasks while helping operators respond more confidently when an event departs from the plan.

Building for change while maintaining reliability

Every additional version creates another output that must be protected and monitored. Low latency remains critical for remote contribution and distributed production, but teams also need resilient routing and effective error recovery throughout the network. Formats such as JPEG XS can preserve quality while keeping delay low, provided the wider workflow is engineered to maintain that performance.

Operational recovery also requires special attention because a backup that takes too long to activate offers limited protection during live sports. Teams need to know which services are affected and whether the problem sits at acquisition, production, versioning or delivery. A connected IP environment can provide that visibility when monitoring has been designed alongside the signal path.

The number of feeds produced is a poor measure of success on its own. A better test is how quickly a team can introduce a new version and how confidently it can operate that output throughout an event. Adding another rights partner should eventually involve selecting a proven configuration rather than building another isolated workflow.

This model also changes the commercial potential of a live production by allowing one event to serve partners with different audience and branding requirements. Rights holders can offer localized coverage and platform-specific experiences to additional partners without funding a separate production for every opportunity. Fans receive coverage that feels more relevant, while production teams can support that personalization without making every event harder to operate.

The primary feed will remain the foundation because every version depends on its technical quality and editorial judgement. Modern sports production now asks that foundation to support a much larger and more changeable operation. The organizations that succeed will make additional feeds feel routine in the control room, even when the experiences delivered to viewers are very different.
