LEVA s 5 Annual Conference Delivers Training Value for Public Safety Video Profeionals

The Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA) has kept prices low and learning opportunities high for the 2014 LEVA Digital Multimedia Evidence Training Symposium, which runs Oct. 6-10 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The five-day event will focus on forensic video and audio technologies, plus production, post production, and Web design. The conference schedule includes a mix of hands-on workshops, case studies, and interactive seminars, as well as an exhibit hall and networking opportunities.

With training dollars limited for many public safety agencies, we work to raise the bar at every annual conference. There has been an increase in topics, more diverse presenters, wider variety of technology exhibits and stronger attendance each year, said Jan Garvin, LEVA vice president of training. The price of admission is purposefully low to allow more agencies to send people.

Martin Schouten, coordinator of the Forensic Video Analysis Unit (FVAU) for the Lower Mainland District Integrated Forensic Identification Services, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, will be returning to the LEVA annual conference this year. He said the experience will help him learn new skills in the discipline of forensic video analysis, gain credits towards recertification as a Certified Forensic Video Analyst, network with peers, and discover new products and vendors that could enhance our units abilities to provide our services.

LEVA has provided forensic video analysis training since 2000, and offers two levels of certification - Certified Forensic Video Analyst (CFVA) and Certified Forensic Video Technician (CFVT). Currently, there are 44 Analysts and 211 Technicians certified by LEVA. Each conference session earns attendees hours for LEVA certification.

Schouten is looking forward to the Reverse Projection Workshop, a two-day seminar that will earn him 16 hours toward LEVA recertification. It is a particular training that I've been hoping to get for years, he added, so I'm glad to finally have the opportunity to learn this new skillset.

According to LEVA president Det. Blaine Davison, Norman, Oklahoma, Police Department, the conference has attracted registrants from across the United States and Canada, and will host additional attendees from Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. We continue to attract an international group of students because of the value of our training, he continued.
