Domestic waste claification to cover 70% of urban area

It is learned from the Ningbo Administration of Domestic Waste Classification that in 2016 the coverage rate of domestic waste classification in the urban area will reach 70%, and that in the resident communities will reach 60%.

By the end of 2015, about 251,800 households in 456 communities of 31 streets had participated the domestic waste classification activity, and the waste classification project had been advocated in 1211 government departments and state-owned enterprises and 130 primary and secondary schools. The coverage rate for domestic waste classification in the urban area reached 66%, much higher than the 50% target set by the provincial government.

"Despite the achievements, there are still many problems, like the unsatisfactory sorting quality, and that is the focus of our work in 2016." said Hu Liu, Deputy Director of the municipal Administration of Domestic Waste Classification. To address the problems, Ningbo will further improve the on-campus waste classification system, promote the overall implementation of the real-name QR code of domestic waste classification and purchase the third-party services, with the aim of building the waste classification as a "new fashion" of the citizens.

As a major frontier for waste classification, the primary and secondary schools will launch the "Five One" system, namely one system, one facility, one team, one book, and one class, to guide the students to develop the awareness of waste classification and then spread it to their own families.

In 2016, the real-name QR code system will be applied in the whole city. In November 2015, Haishu District and Jiangdong District carried out the pilot project for the system. "We distribute the plastic bags for collecting kitchen waste, and each household has its own QR code for the bags. By scanning the code, we can find out the sorting results easily." said Chen Saihua, Community Secretary of Anfeng Community of Baiyun Street of Haishu District, a pilot community for the real-name QR code system. "From the sample examination, we can see that the sorting quality has witnessed great improvement, and we can now find little other waste from the bags for kitchen waste."

The real-name system is both a pressure and a motivation for the citizens. Reportedly, the plastic bags for collecting kitchen waste with the QR code will be distributed to all the citizens from August this year.

In promoting waste classification, the public welfare organizations, social groups and volunteers are also major forces, thus the professional volunteer teams and the project-oriented operation model are the current focus for the waste classification work. "We will attempt to purchase social services and intelligence to cultivate the local public welfare organizations for professional waste classification and solve the problems encountered in our work." said Hu Liu.
