The SABC and SAPS sign a memorandum of understanding --

On 13 March 2015, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will help both parties to highlight and create awareness around crime and criminal activities. This relationship is also aimed at encouraging the general public to provide information on criminal activities to the SAPS on its dedicated hotline contact number, and other available platforms.

The SABC and SAPS have a responsibility to protect the society and it is in this regard that it is imperative to strengthen the existing relationship between the two parties. Both parties have worked tirelessly over the years to create awareness through the When duty Calls programme on SABC 2.

The national commissioner of the police, General Riah Phiyega, said: This is a very important and special day for the police because the SABC as a media platform plays a critical role in our efforts to fight crime. This MoU is important as crime is a social ill that we have to fight collectively, as we don t want crime to interfere with our lives .

The SABC s chief operations officer, Mr Hlaudi Motsoeneng commented: We are delighted that as the country s only public service broadcaster with the largest footprint in the country, we are part of this initiative. This partnership is in line with our value as an organisation to establish and maintain key stakeholders in society as we fulfil our vision.

The SABC s editorial independence is not in any way affected by the newly established relationship and both parties remain committed in serving the millions of South Africans and those people outside our borders who rely on SABC.
