Story Highlights
The sports-production industry lost one of its most beloved and impactful leaders when Mobile TV Group Founder and Chairman Phil Garvin died at the age of 76 after a long battle against cancer.
In five decades in the business, he was responsible for production of hundreds of thousands of live sports, news, and entertainment events and also helped pioneer the HD revolution of the early 2000s. In addition to contributions to the industry, Garvin was widely respected by colleagues, customers, partners, and competitors.
Many of those closest to him - including leaders from major sports broadcasters, leagues, mobile-production-facility providers, crewing services, technology manufacturers - took a moment to reflect on Garvin's contributions to the industry and offer a few fond memories of their friend and colleague.
Mary Ellen Carlyle, SVP/GM, Dome Productions, and Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer
Phil was highly respected as an industry pioneer. A real trailblazer in the world of regional televised sports. Extraordinary passion and always spoke about our mobile industry with pride. Always asking how we can move forward and testing the limits. I am honored to have worked alongside Phil and valued our mobile-family panel discussions. He will be forever remembered for his contributions to our industry. Phil will be truly missed by the whole Dome team and myself. Our hearts and thoughts are with Nick and his loved ones
Bob Carzoli, Chairman, Program Productions
To most, Phil Garvin was an industry pioneer. From regional-sports-network production to dual feeds to the launching and running of HDNet, Phil was at the forefront of many innovations we take for granted in today's broadcast world. To me, though, he was the single most important person in my professional life and, other than my own father, the greatest mentor I could have ever asked for. No matter the moment, dilemma or challenge, he'd always assure me that I would be successful. He knew it to be true because he was helping make that happen. My life simply won't be the same without him around.
Billy Chambers, EVP, Local Media, MLB (along with the entire MLB Local Media team)
Phil was a visionary leader in the broadcast-television industry, revolutionizing the way content was delivered to millions of people across the country. With decades of groundbreaking work, Phil shaped the future of television, making an indelible impact on audiences and colleagues alike. Besides the loss to our industry, we lost a great man, teacher, and friend.
Mike Connelly, EVP, Bally Sports
Phil was a pioneer at heart. He saw the future of sports television, starting with the first full-time high-definition sports network, HD-Net in the early 2000s. Then, while all other mobile-TV vendors focused on the Big Four networks to supply bigger and more technically advanced mobile units for the most high-profile events, Phil catered to the RSNs, building technically advanced and efficient mobile trucks for the RSN industry - from controversial dual-feed mobile units, a technology combining resources of multiple broadcasts fed to multiple markets in high definition, to his most recent groundbreaking technology: Cloud Control broadcasts, the first virtual control rooms allowing key technical positions to work from any location for multiple-feed sports broadcasts. Both have been leveraged across sports television to become the norm at the regional level. He was a true innovator and will be missed.
Mark Cuban, Minority Owner/Head of Basketball Ops, Dallas Mavericks, and Co-Founder (along with Garvin), AXS TV and HDNet
Phil was an amazing man. Smart. Honorable. And as hard-working as anyone ever. I'm lucky we were partners. May his memory be a blessing.
Mike Davies, EVP, Field and Technical Management and Operations, FOX Sports
He was a mentor to me, embodying a quiet grace in the business rather than seeking the spotlight; he wasn't built for that. He always credited his company's success to his team's efforts. Bold in his decisions, he approached and embraced innovation with remarkable confidence and fearlessness.
Randy Freer, Former President, FOX Networks Group, and Co-President/COO, FOX Sports Media Group
Phil played a crucial yet unsung role in shaping how fans experience their sports obsession today. His contributions revolutionized the industry, making high-definition sports coverage accessible for fans everywhere. Phil leaves behind a legacy of innovation and leadership. His creativity and deep understanding of the evolving sports-TV landscape were instrumental in transforming local sports broadcasting. He was known for his willingness to listen and tackle challenges head-on, even when they work against his own interest. Phil's best traits were the simplicity of being a good person, friend, and colleague. He did what he said he was going to do without drama. Phil grew up on Park Avenue but was comfortable anywhere and with anyone. I saw firsthand how Phil and Doug Sellars worked with producers and directors to create the path for local sports production to innovate and transition to high-definition. His impact on the industry and those who knew him will be deeply missed; I am sure what Phil instilled in his son Nick and others will enable us to see his impact on the industry for many years. He was indeed one of the good guys.
Hugo Gaggioni, CTO, Sony Imaging Products and Professional Solutions, and Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer
I was very shocked and saddened to read the news about the passing of Phil Garvin. I met Phil many years ago d
