Ofcom: UK could host up to 0 UHD channels

The UK could accommodate up to 30 Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV channels without the need for additional satellite spectrum, according to Ofcom.

The UK regulator made the statement in its Space spectrum strategy' document.

Satellite TV is currently delivered to 11.2 million homes in the UK, and Ofcom says that the demand for higher resolution content could rise as the price of 4K and 8K continues its growth.

Although the rate of growth in demand for UHD services is unclear, we anticipate that it is likely to contribute to growth in demand for satellite capacity for direct-to-home satellite TV, Ofcom said.

However, with the ever-growing dominance of OTT and on demand services, Ofcom also stated that it was entirely possibly that demand for broadcast may fall as consumers move on from live TV.

Digital satellite accounted for 40.5 per cent of total TV viewing hours in 2014, compared with 44.3 per cent for digital terrestrial TV.
