Open Source Community Widely Adopts SRT Video Streaming Protocol with VLC, GStreamer and Wireshark Support

New Mozilla Public License will help increase SRT adoption with mobile-friendly development

MONTREAL, CANADA - March 28, 2018 - The SRT Open Source Project, the fastest growing open source video streaming movement, announced wide adoption of the SRT open source video transport protocol and technology stack with VLC, GStreamer and Wireshark support, as well as a new Mozilla Public License.

SRT, developed and pioneered by Haivision, optimizes streaming performance across unpredictable networks with secure streams and easy firewall traversal, bringing the best quality live video over the worst networks.

Open Source Community Adoption

With continued adoption in the open source community as well as broadcast and streaming industries, SRT is well on its way to becoming a de facto standard for low latency, secure, reliable streaming over the internet. SRT is now supported by the leading open source technologies, including:

VLC by VideoLAN: Version 3.0 of the most popular open source media player and streaming engine now directly supports SRT.

GStreamer: An open source pipeline-based multimedia framework and a popular development basis for mobile, embedded, and desktop applications. Version 1.14.0 now directly supports SRT.

Wireshark: The world's foremost and widely-used network protocol analyzer now has a plugin available directly supporting SRT.

New More Permissive Open Source Licensing

The SRT Open Source Project will be changing the project's license from GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL 2.1) to Mozilla Public License (MPL 2.0). MPL allows for static library support rather than enforcing dynamically linked libraries, providing flexibility to all developers and enabling integration of SRT in mobile applications.
