SVG Students To Watch: Kaden Sherman, Albany State University

This recent graduate and Georgia native has turned an early fascination with live production into a growing passion for camera work

What drew you to live sports production, and how did you get started?

I first became interested in live sports production after attending an Atlanta Hawks game. During a break in the action, I saw myself on the Jumbotron and noticed the camera operator who captured the shot. Seeing how he controlled what thousands of people were watching in real time stuck with me. That moment made me curious about everything happening behind the scenes and ultimately pushed me to get involved.

Sherman built his experience as a camera operator, capturing the action and atmosphere of Albany State athletics. Here he shoots a rivalry football game vs. Florida A&M University.Are there any aha moments when you realized you really loved a particular role?

One of my biggest aha moments came during an Albany State playoff game. When a player returned an interception for a touchdown, I was able to track the entire play live, and knowing I captured such an exciting moment as it happened made me realize how much I enjoy being behind the camera.

Sherman hopes to work professionally as a camera operator on live events. Here he shoots an Albany State basketball game vs. Clark Atlanta University.What has been your favorite project or game that you've worked on, and why?

My favorite experience was working a rivalry playoff game between Albany State and FAMU. The energy from the crowd was intense, and every play felt important. Being in that environment and contributing to the broadcast made it an unforgettable experience.

What's the most challenging aspect of working in live sports production as a student?

The most challenging part is the pace. Everything moves fast, and you have to stay alert at all times. There's no room for hesitation, so you have to stay focused and be ready for anything at any moment.

What are your career aspirations after graduation?

In the long term, I hope to work as a camera operator for professional teams like the Atlanta Falcons or the Atlanta Hawks, capturing high-level sports moments live.

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

I would tell my freshman self not to be afraid to put myself out there. Networking and building connections are just as important as developing your skills, so it's important to meet people and take advantage of every opportunity.
