RT today announced that Ger Gilroy will join the RT Podcasts team to present a daily sports podcast. Launching later this year, the new show will set the sports agenda across the week with its coverage of the biggest moments in GAA, soccer, rugby, athletics, boxing and beyond.
Born in Belfast, Ger Gilroy grew up in Athy, Co Kildare, and moved to Dublin in the 90's. He has worked as a sports presenter across radio, podcasting, TV and digital video over the past 25 years. His most recent roles were as Managing Director of Off The Ball and host of Off The Ball Breakfast every Monday to Thursday.
This daily sports show is part of an ambitious strategy to grow the RT podcast slate alongside the launch of the station's new audio app. This week, RT Podcasts launched Ramble with Joe McGucken, an interview podcast that takes listeners to some of Ireland's weirder corners. This builds on the recent success of RT 's history podcast, What Were We Like. In addition to this sports podcast, upcoming launches include a weekly true crime podcast, a dating podcast and a high-performance interview series with hurling legend Joe Canning.
RT Director of Audio, Patricia Monahan added; This is a key step for us in the delivery of the New Direction strategy which promises to engage audiences across Ireland with high impact content on digital platforms in addition to our well-established linear services. Ger's appointment, the original slate of podcasts that we are rolling out in the coming months and the launch of our new Audio App later this year are signs of how that promise is now coming to life in RT Audio and our ambition to provide for audiences wherever they are.
Presenter Ger Gilroy said; I'm thrilled to be joining and can't wait to start chatting with new audiences across RT 's podcast network about the things they love. It's great to have two-way conversations that include the audience, so we'll be wherever they are online -talking to them, but also listening to what they're interested in. Frankly, that's more important than ever in the face of the onslaught of AI and, let's face it, some made-up stuff. I'm also looking forward to collaborating with some of the great people in RT Sport, which has borne witness to many of the most electrifying moments this country has had over the years. I can't wait to get started, it's going to be some craic.
Head of RT Podcasts, Hugh Ormond said; From day one, sport has been a big part of the plan for RT Podcasts. We are really excited to work with Ger because of his obvious on-air charisma and his standing in the sports community but also his innate understanding that love of sport is rooted in stories, characters, opinions and humour. We are looking forward to growing Ger's RT audience, bringing them amazing sports coverage, and seeing where else this might take us.
Launching later this year, Ger's podcast will be an important addition to RT 's audio sports portfolio, which already includes Inside Sport and Saturday and Sunday Sport on RT Radio 1, and RT Sport's specialist podcasts across rugby, soccer and GAA.
