SCTE, CABLELABS TEAM TO IMPROVE ENERGY MANAGEMENT; COLLABORATE FOR END-TO-END STRATEGIES TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION, COSTS
Comprehensive Approach to be Highlighted at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo
SEPT. 10, 2014 (Exton, PA) The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and Cable Television Laboratories (CableLabs ) today announced that they are teaming up to improve energy management for cable, providing the industry with end-to-end strategies and innovations that can reduce energy consumption and costs in facilities, plants, and fleet, as well as in the home.
The two organizations are expanding their existing relationship to ensure greater coordination between two distinct areas: CableLabs' focus within the customer premise, and SCTE's responsibility for the remainder of the industry's technical operations. The increased cooperation includes greater sharing of information and resources, as well as cross-representation that assures that activities undertaken by either organization are aligned with the needs of the other.
CableLabs and SCTE will highlight the end-to-end approach via exhibits and sessions next week at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo (http://expo.scte.org) in Denver, including:
Demonstration at the CableLabs exhibit of "sleep mode" on a Samsung six-tuner DOCSIS 3.0 set-top box that can reduce power draw by 40 percent;
SCTE's Energy 2020 session on Wednesday, Sept. 24 that will be keynoted by John Schanz, executive vice president and Chief Network Officer of Comcast, and that will outline the product requirements and standards needed for cable's next generation of energy-efficient networks and equipment; Energy 2020 details are available at www.scte.org/energy;
Workshop sessions on "Optimizing Energy Consumption" and "Ensuring Energy" on Thursday, Sept. 25; and
A score of show floor exhibits that will feature or include products and solutions designed to address cable's energy needs.
"CableLabs is supporting energy-efficiency initiatives on many fronts, by providing substantial technical support to the STB Voluntary Agreement, updating existing specifications to address low-power modes, and driving energy efficiency into the forefront of new industry specifications", said Ralph Brown, CTO of CableLabs. "The end-to-end solution we're creating together with SCTE is expanding the benefits of reduced power consumption across the entire cable network."
"Through our pioneering Smart Energy Management Initiative and now the Energy 2020 program, SCTE is creating the standards, the best practices and the industry consensus that are enabling cable operators to reduce costs and ensure energy availability in cable networks," said Daniel Howard, senior vice president and CTO of SCTE. "Our partnership will help the industry develop a comprehensive strategy as CableLabs strives to bring the same cost benefits to residential and business customers."
Energy 2020 is a collaborative venture that brings together the collective vision and technology expertise of cable operators and the vendor community to achieve maximum customer uptime and enablement of cable network capacity growth via successful organization, customer and environmental energy solutions. The program is intended to create alignment on standards and best practices, to drive design and implementation of equipment, and to create SCTE training resources that will enable workforce teams to optimize technology for maximum efficiency.
Scheduled for Sept. 22-25 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, SCTE Cable-Tec Expo once again promises to be the leading venue for helping the cable telecommunications industry and its workforce to reduce costs, deploy new services and increase customer satisfaction. This year's general sessions will feature keynote insights from two of the industry's most notable executives: Rob Lloyd, president, development and sales for Cisco, and Mike Fries, president and CEO of Liberty Global.
