An ideal way to learn how to live longer and better is to study people who are doing just that. Dan distills the deepest insights from the Blue Zones to light our path. -Dr. Mehmet Oz
WASHINGTON (March 19, 2015)-For more than a decade, longevity expert Dan Buettner has traveled the globe in search of the world's longevity hot spots, communities he's identified as Blue Zones (Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; the Ogliastra region of Sardinia; Loma Linda, California; and Nicoya, Costa Rica). These are places with high concentrations of 100-year-olds who have grown old without preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Buettner's first book based on his research, The Blue Zones, was a New York Times best-seller and media sensation, sparking intense curiosity and conversation around the world about the secrets to living longer, healthier lives.
Since then, Buettner has committed himself to using his findings for a bigger purpose - to help Americans get healthy. In 2009, he launched the Blue Zones Project, the largest preventive health care project in the United States, which has improved the health of more than 5 million Americans. And his new book, THE BLUE ZONES SOLUTION: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People (National Geographic Books; April 7, 2015; hardcover), reveals how to transform your health using the smart eating and lifestyle practices of the world's longest-lived people and shows how large-scale community changes - focused on improving the health environment rather than individual behavior change - can replicate Blue Zones in America.
With a foreword by Dean Ornish, M.D., founder and president of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, THE BLUE ZONES SOLUTION is organized into four sections:
Discovering the Blue Zones - shares the dietary and eating habits of centenarians in the known Blue Zones and lists the top superfoods of longevity in each region and their specific health benefits;
Making American Blue Zones - details Buettner's efforts to convince community leaders in the United States to try Blue Zoning their cities. It highlights the life-changing results of the makeovers (weight lost, health gained, millions of dollars saved) and includes inspiring personal stories of participants;
Building Your Own Blue Zone - gives step-by-step guidelines on how to maximize health, build social networks and optimize your environment for well-being;
Blue Zones Recipes - includes more than 70 recipes gleaned from Buettner's research that showcase the foods and flavors of the world's healthiest people and invite readers to gather and connect around food, community and downtime - key aspects of every Blue Zone in the world.
The secret to longevity does not rest with the federal government or the medical community, asserts Buettner. The answer rests with those in our communities who control our living environments - municipal officials, restaurant owners, school administrators, mothers and fathers who run households and make daily lifestyle decisions. If we arm these people with strategies to nudge us into better eating, more natural movement and better social interaction, better health will ensue, with longevity an added bonus. It's not a silver bullet, it's silver buckshot: a healthy swarm of small things that make a huge impact.
A groundbreaking book with proven results and actionable advice, THE BLUE ZONES SOLUTION is a blueprint for revitalizing the population and helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives.
