SMPTE President Makes First-Ever Visit to India
SMPTE Technology Committees and President Patrick Griffis Share SMPTE with Colleagues in India and Announce New SMPTE Student Chapter
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - March 17, 2020 -SMPTEs Technology Committees (TC) and Patrick Griffis, president of SMPTE and technology vice president in the CTO office at Dolby, met face-to-face in Mumbai, India. This is the first visit by any SMPTE President to India. SMPTE is the global membership organization whose standards work has supported a century of advances in entertainment media technology.
The SMPTE India Section hosted the meetings at Whistling Woods International (WWI) film school. Deep appreciation and thanks are owed to Chaitanya Chinchlikar, vice president and CTO at WWI, and SMPTE India Section chairman and technical advisor at KPMG Ujwal N. Nirgudkar along with Section managers R. M. Rao, S. S. Nair, Shailesh Parab, Vikram Joglekar and Rahul Purav for organizing our visit.
An Outcome Report from this TC standards meeting will be added to the Society's collection of outcome reports by March 28.
The community of media professionals, technologists and engineers have work to do to advance the industry and our strength has always been in working together. That's why we benefit when we meet in-person. Griffis said. Following this first ever TC meeting in India, we are thrilled to have met professionals in India who can contribute to, and benefit from, SMPTE.
In addition to the TC meetings, Griffis gave a presentation on the PERK s of SMPTE membership -- People, Enhancing Your Career, Recognition, and Knowledge -- and interacted with nearly 100 students and faculty from WWI and the Pune Film and Television Institute of India.
At the week's concluding dinner, Griffis announced the formation of a new SMPTE Student Chapter at Whistling Woods International. This is the first SMPTE Student Chapter in India.
We have students from all kinds of schools of thought. We have engineers, we have technicians; and we have thinkers, writers, musicians, actors and so on, said Subhash Ghai, director, producer, screenwriter, and founder and chairman of Whistling Woods International. It's a combination of many talents within a common environment, and that's because every technician needs to be an artist, and every artist needs to be a technician. We feel blessed to be associated with SMPTE, and initiate the new student chapter in India. I'm sure this will enlighten the younger generation of India with a new perspective , he continued.
During the final day, SMPTE was taken on a Mumbai city tour that included Film City and the National Film Archive of India's museum of cinema.
