Saturday March 23rd saw landmarks, organisations and individuals across the world switch off their lights for an hour to mark 2013 Earth Hour. Two high profile switchoffs' in the Middle East were at Dubai's Burj Khalifa tower - the world's tallest building - and Atlantis Palm Resort, where Coda Audio loudspeakers played a key role.

Now in its seventh year, Earth Hour is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature and encourages people to switch off their non-essential lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm local time, to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. Dubai-based Sound On Stage Events provided the technical production for two live concerts, one on an outdoor stage in front of Burj Khalifa, the other in the Atlantis Palm hotel, which celebrated Earth Hour.

At Burj Khalifa, 12 Coda ViRAY and six SCV-F subs covered a 2000-strong audience in an area measuring 60 x 45 metres, who enjoyed performances by a range of artists. At the Palm hotel, meanwhile, bestselling Lebanese singers Najwa Karam and Fares Karam performed with 24 ViRAY and eight SCV-F subs.

Monitors for both shows comprised eight Coda CUE FOUR, four CUE TWO and two CUE ONEs, driven by C5 amplifiers in active mode. Control for the entire systems was by RC20T touring racks.

Najwa and Fares always request that we supply their audio systems, because we use the best equipment and get the best sound, says Sound On Stage Events technical manager Rawad Saad. The Atlantis Palme system also had to cover a 16 metre long catwalk in front of the stage, which it did seamlessly.

All of the performers were very happy with the sound and the organisers of both events say they were a complete success.
