New cameras shape the remote production landscape --

A wave of new inexpensive video production cameras, engineered to offer an array of useful, multi-purpose features, has simplified remote operations for broadcasters with tight budgets and limited resources. The live streaming and HD transmission features offered by these cameras allow reporters to respond to a growing demand for instant news, which isn t always possible when relying solely on a news van.

Due to the advancement of mobile camera technology, stations no longer need ENG vehicles to house field reporting equipment or transmit footage to audiences.

The Panasonic AW-HE130 integrated camera for example, is ideal for live broadcasting from studio or on location. The camera employs Power over Ethernet (POE ) for easier integration, and multi-stream transmission of H.264 HD video and audio (up to 1080/60p at 24Mbps). Streaming video output is available from the HE130 in several forms and formats, and at a wide range of transmission speeds.

The addition of PoE , (Power over Ethernet plus) means that the camera only needs one LAN cable for its power supply, control and video output, said Markus Naegele, Panasonic product marketing manager. This reduces installation costs and saves time, while costs are also reduced through the ability to transmit video via IP without the need of an encoder.

JVC s GY-HM650 ProHD camera delivers outstanding full HD image capture and delivery, while the built-in streaming engine, FTP and 4G LTE connectivity allows live HD transmission directly from the camera without being attached to external costly and cumbersome bonded cellular solutions. We believe the future is with the live video streaming and FTP service fully integrated into the camera, as demonstrated with the new GY-HM890 and GY-HM850, explained Edgar Shane, general manager of engineering, JVC Professional Products. With the recent advancements in 4G LTE availability and bandwidth, service providers can deliver reliable high-speed connections that can support HD streaming with a single modem. This technology is here now, and will continue to progress and improve.
