South Africa's participation at Toronto International Film Festival increases

09 September 2014: South Africa will have an increased participation at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this year with more than 30 Filmmakers, supported by the National Film and Video Foundation and the Department of Trade and Industry in attendance. The festival, which started on the 4th of September and is scheduled to end on the 14th of September gives an opportunity for filmmakers to conduct and establish business contacts.

Big World Cinema spearheaded by Steven Markovitz and the Association for Transformation of Film and Television also complements South Africa's participation.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has partnered with Film Market Access (FMA) and selected three tier 2 producers and 4 emerging filmmakers from South Africa to participate in the Toronto Program taking place during the festival. This is the 2nd year the NFVF creates this kind of opportunity for emerging filmmakers. The producers will take part in the FMA Toronto Program from 3rd to the 13th of September 2014. The program is designed to widen and strengthen each participant's current professional network. It is also designed to help each participant gain the industry knowledge that they desire from TIFF Industry Programs. Participants will have an opportunity to attend panels, screenings and receptions.

One of the NFVF funded feature Impunity, the only South African feature film in the festival's official selection had its premiered at the festival on Saturday the 06th. The film tells the story of a murder investigation surrounding the death of a cabinet ministers daughter. While the special investigator and a local police detective run into political corruption and conspiracy, the involvement of two young lovers caught up in a killing spree tests the limits of justice. The film is a psycho-political thriller directed by Jyoti Mistry, and stars Desmond Dube, Alex McGregor, Vaneshran Arumugam and Bjorn Steinbach.

Big World Cinema Projects that will be showcased at the festival are:

Beats of the Antonov: Beats of the Antonov tells the story of the people of the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains in Sudan, showing how they deal with civil war. Traditionally music has always been part of daily life in these areas, but now, it has a new role in a society challenged by war.

Stories of our Lives: Stories of our lives documents hidden personal stories of lovers, fighters and rebels and the community histories that characterize the queer experience in Kenya.
