Yahsat Enhances Services on Y1B Satellite with Hughes Jupiter System

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 3 January 2017:- The UAE-based satellite operator, Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), announced implementation of the latest version of the Hughes JUPITER System, developed by Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes), the world's leading provider of broadband satellite solutions and services. The system equipped with the new DVB-S2X air interface standard, will refresh and expand the services delivered over Yahsat's Y1B Ka-band satellite.

The demand for more services and higher performance is growing in all markets, said Marcus Vilaca- Chief Technical Officer at Yahsat. Yahsat's satellite broadband service YahClick, serves consumers, businesses and governments in the Middle East, Africa and Central and South West Asia. Upgrading its JUPITER satellite broadband system with DVB-S2X will yield more scalable bandwidth while enhancing performance across all of its service categories. Yahsat's service partners will gain capabilities such as the new virtual network operator (VNO) service while utilizing existing integrated OSS/BSS and service delivery infrastructure via cloud services.

The JUPITER System will also power services over Yahsat's third satellite, Al Yah 3, a new High Throughput Satellite (HTS) which is due to launch in early 2017 and will extend the company's presence in Africa to 19 countries and Brazil.

Even as capacity grows with major HTS satellite launches over the next few years, providers need to use bandwidth as efficiently as possible to meet steadily growing demand, said Dave Jupin, senior vice president, international operations at Hughes Network Systems. By increasing the amount of scalable and guaranteed serviceable bandwidth on each satellite, JUPITER gives providers the flexibility to offer new services while maintaining top performance.

DVB-S2X support and other new features of the JUPITER System, one of the world's most widely deployed satellite Internet platforms, improves operating economics for operators. DVB-S2X is incorporated in JUPITER's second-generation System on a Chip (SoC-2) and a new family of broadband VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminals.)

JUPITER features a flexible and robust gateway architecture with lights-out operation, enhanced IPoS air interface for bandwidth efficiency and performance, and high-throughput terminals. JUPITER enables operators to achieve the highest possible capacity and efficiency for any satellite broadband implementation. The foundational technology is the powerful JUPITER SOC, a custom-designed VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) processor employing a multi-core architecture and enabling 200 Mbps of throughput on every terminal in the JUPITER family.
