Last week, we went over the story about Terry's Testing Labs and Terry's problem with his escrow deposit missing some critical information. This week we focus on Level Four Verification and why it is important for your most mission-critical software.

Escrow Verification is used to confirm that an escrow deposit contains everything that is documented in the escrow agreement. If something were to go wrong with your technology vendor, Escrow Verification services provide a quality control mechanism for the escrow deposit. There are four levels of Escrow Verification, with increasingly stringent levels of testing.

Bruno Belron is a financial planner who uses planning software to show his clients how their investments will grow over time. He stores a copy of his planning application safely in an escrow account. When he had to reinstall the application into his system he used the copy stored in escrow, but it would not work because it turned out it was missing an entire module in the code.

If Bruno had ordered a Level 4: Full Usability Verification test it would have simulated the realistic operation conditions which would have led him to discover that the original deposit was incomplete.

A Full Usability test is a Level Four Verification test that runs the code in simulated real-world conditions. It assures beneficiaries that the source code they have in escrow will be completely functional when they need it. This level is recommended for high-risk and sensitive applications since it is the only level that assures the beneficiary that the technology will be completely functional.
