RT National Symphony Orchestra s 2016 Mentoring Scheme 17 March 2016: 22 students from colleges including the CIT Cork School of Music, the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and the Royal Irish Academy of Music have been selected to take part in the RT National Symphony Orchestras 2016 Mentoring Scheme
Studying violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, trumpet, harp and percussion, they are at stages of study ranging from diploma and undergraduate through to masters and postgraduate level and include both Irish and international students. 18 of the 22 students will play with the orchestra for the first time. 12 are currently studying at the the Royal Irish Academy of Music with five studying at the CIT Cork School of Music and three at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. One student is a graduate of the CIT Cork School of Music and currently studying at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, Belgium.
This year's mentoring scheme has been developed to allow participation by a greater number of students and to provide performance opportunities more relevant to the students' own stage of development. Unlike previous years where all students took part in some or all of the same concert, the 2016 scheme will take place over a number of RT NSO concerts, starting this week and running through to the end of June . Many will participate in more than one concert.
Imelda Dervin, General Manager, RT National Symphony Orchestra commented: The mentoring scheme provides young musicians with an invaluable opportunity to experience rehearsing and performing with the RT National Symphony Orchestra, giving very real insights into the career of a professional orchestral musician. The supportive environment of the scheme, facilitated by the RT NSO players, offers critical learning and development opportunities to these young musicians at a pivotal point on their journey to hopefully becoming future members of orchestras both in Ireland and abroad.'
