Series 3 of Nero's Class begins Friday 11 September on RT Listen
The third and final series of hit RT KIDS podcast Nero's Class begins tomorrow, Friday 11 September, on RT Listen and will also air on RT Radio 1 in November. The podcast is a combination of audio comic book, odyssey story, and uniquely Irish absurdist comedy. An immersive adventure series for kids aged 7 and upwards, it includes a unique take on Irish mythology and folklore, and explores themes of community, belonging, neurodiversity, and language.
Also launching this September is an immersive 2D retro video game adaptation of the podcast, Nero's Class vs. The Teabag, the first time RT KIDS has commissioned a game from a podcast.
The show follows Professor Nero (voiced by Hugh Cooney), a well-meaning but out-of-his-depth teacher from The Mainland, whose world is turned upside down when he accepts a job on the mythical island of Mrunglody and finds himself responsible for the education of three whip-smart local students: The wise-beyond-his-years Rowan (Rian Sheridan), leader Jacaranda (Elsie Akinduko), and the imaginative Scoochie Kaboochie (Penny O'Dwyer).
This third series finds our three young heroes trying to undo the chaos that has been wreaked since Nero's arrival, investigate the mystery of their island's origin story, and race against time to restore the sacred peculiarity of their home and community. This series is a labyrinthine ten-part mystery that neatly wraps up Professor Nero's personal odyssey and the wider saga of Mrunglody.
Written and directed by Bobby Aherne, this series boasts a strong supporting cast including comedian Peter McGann, Aoife Spratt, John Doran, Brigid McClean, Bronwyn Murphy-White, and many more. There is also an original soundtrack created by Aherne, with artwork designed by award-winning illustrator Ruan van Vliet.
The new video game Nero's Class vs. The Teabag features the full voice cast, an original script and music by Bobby Aherne, character art by Ruan van Vliet, and background art by Claire Cunningham.
Speaking about the series and new game, writer Bobby Aherne said: It's been a real thrill helping to bring the world of Mrunglody to the Mainlander airwaves over the past five years. I've been so lucky to have held on to the same brilliant cast for all three series, and hopefully long-time listeners will agree that we've stuck the landing! And what an honour to learn that Nero's Class vs. The Teabag is RT 's first-ever video game, so now people can create their own Mrunglodian adventures I really think we've put together a fun little quest that'll be a blast for 90s kids, modern kids, and everyone in-between.
Head of RT KIDS Audio Nicky Coghlan said: Nero's Class is a one-of-a-kind show. From the writing to the cast, the world Bobby has realised is truly singular. His wonderfully-weird podcast brings an imaginary world steeped in Irish culture to vivid life.
Nero's Class is available on RT Listen from Friday 11 September, also airing on RT Radio 1 from November.
