It's not just the video. The in-venue sound and noise also bring the energy to fans watching at home
In most sports broadcasts, the crowd is mostly a background fixture. For the International Dance League, though, fans become integral to the matchup.
The IDL (International Dance League) wrapped up its first season in September after six sold-out events since May in New York, Vancouver, Sydney, Seoul, and Los Angeles. The championship replay aired Oct. 21 on ESPN2 in a special made-for-TV presentation, about a month after the competition was held at Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
An IDL event, with a stage lit like a concert and an audience in near-darkness, is complicated to capture. For our sport, says IDL co-founder/CEO Connor Lim, you're not facing off against your competitor. Even though it's a matchup format, there's no competitor-to-competitor. It's competitor-to-audience: the reaction of the audience is what's interesting and you need to see.
He describes his dance league as a sport made for the TikTok generation. The IDL's inaugural season tallied 6 million livestream views across YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and SOOP, as well as more than 2 billion views of content on social media. The IDL is now in a negotiating window for its media rights, after finishing its one-year deal to air event replays on ESPN2.
There's this interesting dynamic where the team will do something right in their set, and then there's this delay, and you feel the audience scream back at you, Lim says. They're reacting to what they just saw, and, based on that reaction, you see the team walk as one. It gives them more energy. It's like this energy that's balancing back and forth between the dancers on the stage and the audience.
Capturing that song and dance between the performers and audience is the video challenge for the IDL, which deployed a six-camera setup in venues and a production truck staffed by broadcast veterans who have also worked NBA, WNBA, and NFL events. The operators of the stage cameras are former dancers, whose experience helps them find the right angles on the choreography.
Being able to have a little bit of that foreground element of the dancers is something we're gonna try to pull in more for next season, says Lim. We had audience cams and certain things, but, especially when the performances are happening, at least from a live perspective, you didn't catch that as much.
In post, he continues, we were able to find a lot of these moments, [when] you can see that interaction with the crowd and the dance.
Inside IDL venues, the crowd is so loud that the dance music gets buried. You can't hear it half the time, notes Lim.
Mics are placed on cameras and throughout the venue, and an A1 audio engineer mixes the feed so that it's clear for viewers at home. More than the video, he says, it is the sound and the noise in-venue that gives you that feeling of understanding of what's going on.
ID's Connor Lim: There's no competitor-to-competitor. It's competitor-to-audience: the reaction of the audience is what's interesting and you need to see. The IDL's livestream audience is 80% viewers ages 18-34 and skews 55% female. Lim describes the league's Gen Z-oriented fanbase as being different from your traditional sporting audience with viewing habits that are more typical of reality-TV shows and other types of content.
It's essentially a lights-off show, adding another broadcast dynamic for the IDL: a stage lit like a concert and an audience in near-darkness. The range of what you can actually capture in these darker shows is quite difficult, he points out. With a different LED backdrop at every venue, the camera team also had to repaint its cameras at each stop.
Some Hollywood investors are buying into the IDL for 2027. The league recently announced $15 million in Series A funding from investors Sony Group, Sony Corp., KB Partners, APEX, Yamaha Music Innovations Fund, and October Ventures. The round was led by Elysian Park Ventures, which is the venture-capital arm of the Los Angeles Dodgers' ownership group.
For 2027, the IDL plans to redesign its graphics to fit around a TV network's ticker, as well as introduce new camera positions and longer lenses that compress the dancers and crowd into the same frame. Lim plans to make changes to how analysts are added into broadcasts and will also tinker with preshow and overall formatting.
We originally approached it similarly to how you would shoot an award show, Lim says. We thought the hosts on stage could carry a lot of what was going on, but we quickly realized that what we wanted was closer to a traditional sports broadcast.
That means adding play-by-play and separating the live event from the broadcast show, which he says is still a work in progress. The initial format was okay, but it just wasn't landing the way we really wanted it to. That was a great learning, moving into next season.
