BURBANK, CA - September 18, 2014 - SOCAL CONNECTED, KCETs Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series, looks into the growing number of parents who are deciding not give routine vaccinations to their children for fear of exposing them to harmful chemicals. Reporter Laurel Erickson talks with doctors who are critical of the practice, saying it puts children at risk. What are the pros and cons of choosing not to vaccinate? How do the opt-out rates vary across greater L.A.? The story will air on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 8 p.m.

Turning Greenhouse Gases into Plastic: It sounds too good to be true. Two enterprising engineers are taking methane - a potent greenhouse gas - out of the air and turning it into plastic, which in turn becomes chairs, phone cases and any number of consumer items. How do they do it? Science reporter Cara Santa Maria visits the Newlight Technologies lab in Costa Mesa to see the how game-changing process happens. A Downtown Institution Evolves: For nearly 100 years, Grand Central Market has been a hub for fresh groceries, ethnic food stalls and down-home eating. Fascinating Dome-Shaped Homes: We discover the beautiful and ingenious work of the late Nadir Khalili, a Sufi architect who designed dome-shaped homes out of earth and clay.
